small block ID

How can I find out the c.i. of a small block. going 350 hunting so I need to know how to tell the difference. Are there special things to look out for, casting numbers or whatever. Where do I find them? Any way to tell if its a 4bolt or 2bolt without dropping the pan? Help very much appreciated.

Thanks peoples

Unfortunately, the casting number doesn't always define whther it is a 2- or 4-bolt main engine. some cases were cast with the same cores and built as either 2- or 4-bolt, so you alomst have to look in the pan.

You'll have better luck getting a 4-bolt from a medium truck than a passenger car.

If you are going for a tuned port engine. Look behind the drivers cylinder head on the flat part of the block and it will say either 5.0L or 5.8L casted right into the block. They will all be 2 bolt mains but you don't need 4 bolts to get into the 13's or 12's anyway.

4-bolts are always better IMO for extra added insurance.

Unless you get a 2-bolt and convert it to 4 bolt with splayed caps, if you can, try and get a 4-bolt block.
