Coolant fan switch question

Can you just by a coolant fan switch to turn the fans on earlier or do you have to buy a different prom chip to work with the cooler fan switch?

I put in a Jet fan switch ( on 200 off 185 ) and a 180 thermostat at the same time. works great, no problems and easy to install. I ordered the switch from Summit for about $45-

my friend has a kit that has a small metal rod that you stick between the fins of your radiator, when it reaches 190 it kicks the fan on. i think it was $20 from murray's discount auto, they also make an adjustable one for 30.
