Recommended fuel pump
Recommended fuel pump
I'm on my third fuel pump in 2 years in my 88 GTA and I think it's starting to go bad. (After it's driven for a long time it starts to make whining noises and the RPM fluctuates in sync with the whining.) So, when I replace it this time I want it to be the last time. Can anyone recommend a brand of fuel pump that will last?

Are you running the tank dry or using excessively high fuel pressure? Unless you got some no-name brand pumps, they should last much longer than that. If you just need a stock replacement, I would buy an ac delco. It may be a bit expensive, but mine has lasted a good 15 years.
Nope, I've never run the tank dry. I believe the last two pumps were whatever NAPA sells. (I just trust my local dealer....)
Here's what it does:
Generally, after a long drive and then comming to a stop I'll hear a whining in the back end. It starts loud and mid-pitch and then goes up in pitch and down in volume until you can't hear it any more. All the while the RPM is decreasing. Sometimes the engine will die, sometimes the fuel pump will "catch" and run for a few seconds before it starts all over again. Generally after a cool-down it will run fine again - for a while.

Aftermarket parts aren't always best
Having been an ASE certified tech for a number of years- I can tell you from experience that many cars have been "fixed" by taking off some half-breed "Iwannagofast" junk and returning to a high quality replacement. One of the first things I look for when I find an ignition mis - are they Autozone plug wires. A-Z has some of the lowest quality crap I've ever seen. Alternator, starter, plug wires, fuel pump.....On the other hand I've seen certain AC Delco pumps, starters and alts go to h3ll real fast also. The point is --get pieces from a reputable source. Find out where local indepedent service shops get their parts. I'll bet they don't use A-Z. I'll also bet that you won't find any aftermarket electrical part that carries a lifetime warranty.
P.S. I am in no way affiliated with any parts store or aftrmrkt parts company.
