A/C condenser Q

Is the only effect of a bad condenser that it leaks? A guy at Auto Zone told me, "If it leaks it's bad, if it doesn't leak then there can't be anything else wrong with it."

How true is this?

Also, I'm replacing the compressor, accumulator and orifice tube. Then having it charged with R-12 at a shop. Any advice/things to watch out for from those of you who've replaced these things? I'm not sure where the orifice tube goes.

The condenser is just a radiator for your a/c, it doesn't do anything but hold freon. Not much that could go wrong with it, except leaking.

The orifice tube should be located between the outlet of the condenser and the inlet of the evaporator. Somewhere in the liquid line.

Rocky,

It is possible to have a condenser get restricted. Sometines the refrigerant oil can collect in the tubes and turn to gel, clogging those passages. That is pretty easy to diagnose with a temperature probe and gauge set.
