Tires...
Simple question with A TON OF DIFFERENT VIEW POINTS.....
I need two rear tires for my 91 Formula. Current the two rears have NO TREAD WHAT SO EVER! They could pass for drag slicks...Any suggestions on tires. Are directional treads REALLY worth it or is it just for looks???
Thanks for advance...
I hope I dont start tooooo much of a war between what tires are good and what tires arent...

Well this thread may get into an arguement, but the first thing is what kind of tire do you want? Is your car a daily driver? How many miles do you drive a year? How long do you want them to last? Do you drive in the rain and snow very much?
I run Goodyear Eagle GS-C's. They are nice and soft and sticky, but wear very poorly. I don't put many miles on my car so thats OK.

What size are you looking for? I ordered the take off GSC's from SLP, they should get here tomorrow. I'll let you guys know. Someone said they still sell the Eagle F1 in 245/50-16 but you have to call tirerack to order them, because they dont list them on their site anymore. If I had the money and know about the F1's I'd probably have went with them...
BTW, GSC's are directional, left and right tires.

Take a look at the Falken 502's or maybe Dunlop 5000. Yokahamas are a good tire but can get a bit pricey.
The previous post had some good points, decide what your needs are and them make your choice. If you are like me I drive a lost and like a tire that will wear well and give decent cornering. I went with the Dunlop 5000. But if the Falken 502 for Falken GR Beta were available at the time then I would have chosen that.

Well my "plan" is to keep this car as a weekend driver and to only keep this car on the road 6 months out of the year....the other 6 months I plan to put it up on stands and run the car every so often to get the condensation on of the motor. I wanna put tires on my Formula that are stock size. No oversized tires...no 20 inch rims (that would be just plain stupid)...none of that b.s. I believe the size of the tire on my car now is 245 60 16. I looked on the door jam for the "stock size" and I didnt see one. Could somebody tell me what the stock size is? My other question is are directional treads really worth it? I know I asked that before but no one answered my question (yet)...
Thanks in advance...

I would use BFG Comp/Ta I have them and love them. My buddy has a 350 and these on his and burns them up ALL the time and they just DON'T wear out and I don't know how. They are a GREAT tire for the money
My car had been repainted so the door sticker is absent, however the guys at Raben told me the stock size was the 225/ they could easily be wrong, but I just took their word for it and they looked alright.

BE SURE TO CHECK LOCAL TIRE SHOPS FOR BARGAINS. I ASKED AT SEARS, AND FOUND SOME Z RATED 255/50R16 FOR $88 EACH. THEY ARE "VIPER", WHICH IS MADE BY GOODEYEAR.
A WORD OR WARNING ABOUT "MUD AND SNOW" RATED TIRES. THE LAST DATA I SAW FROM THE TIRE GROUPS WERE THE THE TIRE MANFACTURERS COULD NOT AGREE ON WHAT A "MUD AND SNOW" TIRE WAS. SO THEIR DEFINATION WAS THAT THE TIRE WILL HAVE 25% VOID, MEANING 25% GROOVES AND LUGS. SO YOU COULD HAVE 4-5 RINGS AROUND THE TIRE AND NO LUGS AND IT COULD QUALIFY (BUT GIVE YOU ZERO TRACTION IN THE SNOW).

made by goodyear and actually a goodyear tire isn't the same thing just as not all goodyear tires are created equal. there is quite a difference from the everyday driving eagle gt II's and the eagle F1 supercar tire. z rated also does not make it a great tire.

Hey,Bud
I just bought 4 bfgoodrich g-force KDW tires
they look good and are directional to boot,
i know the price is up there But I feel that if
you like to "fly" once in a blue moon the tires
should be the best that you can afford And rated for the speed that you travel, better safe than sorry. Take care, later GTA.......

I totally agree with zippy. If I had the $ I'd go with a Goodyear Eagle F1 or Michelin Pilot Sport. As a matter of fact, just got these in a few minutes ago...

Well I finally decided to get off my lazy butt and pull off the two rear tires on my Firebird. It wasnt really fun to do because Im accustomed to having a lift and air tools. But since my firebird isnt "roadworthy" yet Im doing the work on the ground in my garage...
Anyway.. I pulled off the two tires and was looking over them....aside from the fact that they are both bald...1 tire looked a little more bald than the other. I was wondering (here I go with the stock/nonstock Q's....would a 91 Formula have a posi in it? My guess was yes but now Im doubting myself... I've decided to go with either Falken or BF Goodrich Comp TA's..gotta compare prices in work tommarow. Hopefully I can get the tires within a day..mount 'em in work and then bring them home and put 'em on my car. Slowly but surely I'll get that car roadworthy AND ready for summer..If that car cant help me pick up chicks...then there is no hope....

metalhead: Look under your car at the rear end, there should be a tag on it that says something like "Use Limited Slip Differential Fluid ONLY" if it is posi, or you could run your RPO codes through the de-coder and see if you've got posi.

i could be incorrect on this, but i believe in 91 it came with tuned ports formula's and was optional on tbi's. btw, nice choice on the gsc's. were them the one's from slp?

Yeah, they are SLP take offs. Gonna have them mounted/balances thursday hopefully - get rid of the nasty lookin 15*7 stock wheels. Someone on here said they are "very soft and sticky" Did he say what his car is? I may have missed it....
P.S. As you can see from the pic, they even still have the lil ****** on them still. I didn't think they'd be *THAT* new. Killer deal IMHO.

metalhead212121: Your RPO codes should be on the underside of the lid of your glove box/armrest thing... just a bunch of 3 letter codes like: L98, LB9, 1LE, Z28, etc etc.

Hg~ Hate to tell you this but I opened the glove box/armrest thing and there isnt any sticker there nor does it look like a sticker was there. Any other places I can look for RPO codes?
Sorry for the late replay. As for the guy on here that asked me how I like my BFG's (KDW's)....all I can say is they LOOK nice. My Firebird isnt in roadworthy condition yet. Its still sitting in my garage. I hope by June to have in on the road.
