Block I.D. help!
Block I.D. help!
Im not sure WHERE I should have got the numbers from but a friend has a 71 Cutlas w/ *supposedly* a 350 in it. I have been working on it this past weekend and drove it around....well, it FEELS like a 305!!!
Anyway, it is also "supposed" to be a pontiac motor.
Here is a number I got from the front of the block....just above the water pump: 39558_2
the heads had a number cast into them between the 3 &5 cylinder on the driver side (obviously) 403 859
and the manifolds read :390001L14
any help on what year, size, etc etc etc would be great
thanks...also it has HEI and a Q-jet "carb" LOL

Also alot of the 2 door cutlasses originally had 442 in them. [/B][/QUOTE]
the 442 was not an engine. the 442's early 442's had olds 455 big blocks in them. the 442 simply stands for 4 barreal carb, 4speed tranny, 2(dual)exhaust

Close on the 442... actually they had 400s in themwhen they were introduced in 64; it stood for 400 4-barrel dual exhaust. The 455 didn't come out until a couple of years later.
If it's a Pontiac motor, it will have the distributor in the back, and short valve covers with square corners and 4 bolts. If it's an Olds motor, the VCs will have more bolts, an odd #, either 5 or 7 (I can't recall). If it's a Buick motor the dist will be in the front.
There is also an Olds 307 which was widely used in the 80s, it was pretty much a pig. It looks like a 350 from the outside.
Olds doesn't have "big blocks" and "small blocks". They're all kind of big. The 400 & 455 have a taller deck, while the 307, 350 & 403 have a shorter deck. They're the same "size" block though: same bore spacing, same cam length, same main bearing spacing, etc. unlike say a F*rd or Chevy "big block" where all those things are different from a "small block".
