antifreeze leak.
antifreeze leak.
Hey guys I am having a problem with my antifreeze leaking. I don
't see it anywhere on the groud or driping from anywhere but Everyother day I have do dump about 1/2 gallon of water/antifreeze in. When I shut off the car I do notice a antifreeze smell but the funny thing is that is never overheats. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This happened to me last year, and it was a cracked intake. The pressure spike in the cooling system from the cracked intake then proceeded to take out the heater core. Check the intake really good. Mine cracked on then front passenter corner where some kind of vacuum valve or something screws in. It looked like the intake gaskets were blown because coolant was building up right on the sides where they are, but it was actually just running down there from the crack. Also, take a pocket mirror and look along the back side of it by the distributor to see if there are any leaks there.
To tell if the heads are cracked or head gaskets blown, you can do a couple of things. 1. You should be able to almost smell coolant out of the exhaust pipes, and you will be puffing out a lot of white, moist smoke. 2. (Do this when engine cold so as not to burn yourself) Start engine with radiator cap off. When engine warms to operating speed if there is something wrong with heads/head gaskets, there will be a lot of bubbling going on in the radiator. If the heads/head gaskets are fine, the coolant should flow through smoothly. There will be some surges due to pressure, but if there are head problems, you'll be able to tell what I'm talking about.
The only other thing I could think of usually doesn't happen, but if the frost plug behind the motor by the transmission was leaking, you might not be able to see it dripping on the ground, as it might collect somewhere else.
Hope that helps. Good luck.

If I where to get heads.
Well I already replaced a freeze plug that was leaking last year so I don't think that is it. I did start it and let it get to temp with the radiator cap off and it just keep shooting antifreeze out the top. I did notice that is was bubbling quite a bit and there is also some white smoke coming for the exhaust. Looks like it is time for some new heads. I was going to get some soon anyway. Which ones would you guys recommend on a stock TPI 305. I know there is the L98 heads or S/R torquer heads but which of the two is better in your opinion? Also how much would a set cost?
