My 84 Trans Am vs. 86 IROC

Okay, Ive got my 84 Trans Am, with a 71 350/270 horse, XE262 cam, headers, cat back, hi-po y pipe and no cat, high rise single plane manifold, stock q-jet w/cowl induction and open element filter, and 700R4 with 3.23 posi rear. Decently fast, I was able to pull on a grand national with a spooled up turbo the other night (he hit it, i heard the turbo spool and he took off like a jet, I stand on it and start to pull on him slowly but surely, but I backed off, this was from 35-60, Im like WTF somethings wrong) but havent really gotten to run my car against anything. I shift at 5500 rpm by hand and can hook pretty well with my great stock converter

Anyways, my competition is a 1986 IROC. The kid has the G92 package (this was the only RPO I looked for when I saw it, boy am I dumb) and a 5 speed. Motor has cat back and TPI. Claimed to be 350, but judging by the fact he paid 2500 for a supposedly built 350 in a very nice condition IROC seems a bit suspicious. Of course, by looking at the tech specs, there was no TPI 5 speed G92 made in 1986. Of course, the car has exhaust manifolds on it, and the heads didnt look to be aluminum (he claims their edelbrocks, but they couldve been painted, I didnt look hard). The car is also claimed to have a cam, and though the exhaust sounds good, it does not sound anywhere near as choppy as my motor, and sounds more like my old LG4. Car also looks to have been converted to point ignition from HEI (yet again, my knowledge on this stuff is limited, I saw a seperate coil type thing from the distributor). Do you guys think it could really be a 350?

Anyways, if it is a 350, do I have a shot? The kid is kinda a rookie standard driver, and I figure if this car is as built as claimed, it will be a beast to hook. Do I have a shot if this car is say an L98? The so called cam did not sound very mean, and I have a lot more cam than he does. I figure his lack of being able to hook the car would make up for my stock converter. Should I back off? What do you guys think? In any case, at least the kid doesnt have a honda, and hes cool about talking cars. Doesnt go and tell me so and so's civic is real fast like most people.

there's too much "if he has a cam" and "if his motor is built" to determine who will win. Find out what he has done and then we can definitly tell you who will win. As it looks right now I say you should wipe the floor with him.

hmm lets see, a 350/5 speed? sounds kinda fishy to me. sounds me like he has a lo3 305 if it is stock. and unless he has a world class t-5 then i would guess that it would detonat if u even thought about racing. but at least if u lose to him hes not a honda driver. i say u should race him for fun and tell us what happens.

I told him 350's never came stock with a 5 speed. I looked under the hood, its a TPI, but TPI's weren't supposed to have been available with a 5 speed in 86. Unless it isnt an 86. He claims the motor isnt stock, but I was also thinking if he still had that tranny and its the original tranny, how is it still alive?

If it's an '86 and original motor it's a 305. I didn't realize they had the G92 option that early? I'd say you'll easily take him IF the car is stock.
