about rice vs imports

ok I know this could start a flame war but I found som interesting info on a guys opinion abour rice

I will post the info below and in doing so I hope that ppl will see why there is a difference between rice and imports

mods you can lock this if you want but I please ask you not to as long as the thread remains under control. this is a very good def of rice and why some ppl out there get upset when they are running an import but everyone wants to call them rice. and yes I am aware that this is the theory racing board but this thing called rice gets brought up quite a bit and causes a lot of problems and this is a very good way to make the seperation between the two

now if you want to look at the whole thread yourself it can be found here

http://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=102773

but the info I was refering to is as quoted below

It would seem that the Import “scene” is becoming a real “500lb gorilla” to those that have been in the performance and racing industries.

One could equate it to the civil rights movement (although clearly, its not nearly as important of a social change).

People hate change.

I see a lot of posts on this forum daily.
I will read most, respond where I can, and when I have time.

However, more and more, I see posts more centered on modifications that are in my opinion, ridiculous.

While there are those that will post replies flaming the guy that wants “hiper-blinkers” or Altezza taillights, I have heard a million replies by those out there that say, “it’s their car, and so they can do with it what they like.”

And they are COMPLETELY right.

All I can say to that is, that I agree... BUT...

Don’t some people know that just because you CAN do a thing, doesn’t mean you SHOULD do that thing?!

My father called it “Birthday Fever” (Hopefully you get my point)

I mean, what about buying an RX-7 and putting Honda tailings on it?
Why?!

All to often I see cars driving around and I can tell IMMIDIATELY by the look of it, that wether or not they knew it, the owner wanted ANOTHER car but could only afford the poor “bastard-of-a-bolt-bucket” that he/she is driving now.

It’s been modified to an ungodly state, and possibly even gone so far as to have been made to look like the car the owner REALLY wanted in the first place.

Ultimately, looks like 5 pounds of ****, in a 4-pound bag.

This is just one of the components that make up the look called “RICE”.

There’s that word… Rice.

Folks, Rice is not just driving/owning/modifying/rebuild/repairing an import.
Why do I get called a Rice-Boy just for driving an import car?

Me? Rice?
Who said that?!!

Certainly they weren’t talking about ME!

How can people who want to drive nice, strong, (import) cars, with true performance goals, avoid being lumped in with those that “RICE” their cars?

I have been DYING to quantify this term so that I can be held EXEMPT from it!

Well, it started with various racing modifications and show car “visual effects” that were produced for use in these arenas SPECIFICALLY.

Then, some people went about displaying these ”looks” on the street.
After all, the show car mods, lights, etc., looked cool and attracted attention in the tradeshow.

When it all started, these mods, were universally expensive and were produced & installed by very skilled people.
Some could easily be called artists, and this work would always cost lots of time and money.
(An example would be that neon would have to be cut, drawn, filled, and sealed by hand.)

Same with most any other appearance or performance “mod", all of the work, crafted by skilled hands.

Others saw a cool performance mod to a racecar, couldn’t afford the real thing, but could fake it.
(Out came the Bondo, fiberglass, wire mesh, etc…)

Now, you can buy cheap imitations of parts, scoops, fake disk brakes, and cheap fakes for the racing mods right off the shelf.

I have recently seen all the auto parts stores replace most or all of their performance part isles with all “APC” neon shifter *****, sticker bins, fake carbon fiber radio *****, LIGHTED EXHAUST TIPS, etc.

All designed to mock up something that your car just "isn't".

(I would never buy any piece of APC crap, but I would LOVE to own their stock!)

So, lets break out the definition of "RICE" as it is meant today by most that use the word.
In other words, modifications in the hands of a hormonally/mentally imbalanced “in-DUH-vidual”:

Rice = cheap, fake, gaudy (overly flashy)

Examples:

· TYPE "R" sticker on your Dodge Neon.... RICE
· Sticking one windshield wiper halfway up the windshield... RICE
· Do your “Gumby pants” make it hard to shift?
· Do you have scoops on your car that do NOTHING (like have no mechanical purpose)?
· If any of your “mods” involve intentionally hiding a similar, lesser part?
· If you have stickers that even most Asians don't get (or for parts you DON’T HAVE).
· An exhaust tip diameter 3 or more times your actual exhaust diameter.
· If you have “powered by (anything)” anywhere on the car.
· If you've spent more on stickers than you did on actual performance parts.

So often, I see people driving these CIRCUS FREAK VEHICLES, with tachometers bigger than their head, screwed to the dash with wood screws.

The shift light is working, but they’re in denial about the fact that their car is an AUTOMATIC!

And some cars have more lights on them than those ships from “CLOSE ENCOUNTERS Of The Third Kind”!

Meanwhile the next car drives by in the parking lot and I see the guy peering through the letter “O” in the HUGE “Honda” logo taped diagonally across most of his window.

FREAKSHOW.

I have nothing against making your car look nice.
But as a rule of thumb, if its sold in the isle of an auto parts store, its bolt-on, mass produced, and designed to attract those that are trying to make their cars "pretty" (like a $10 ***** is “pretty”), then forget it man.

This goes for those cheap chrome accessories for V8s and those fake braided hose covers too!
I’m not going to pretend that just IMPORTS are capable of being in this category.

Hell, I know some PEOPLE that would fit into the RICE category!

now the rest of you guys if you would like to post I please ask of you to keep it civil in hopes that the thread doesn't get locked. granted it prolly will b/c it is off topic, but I think there is a little info here that could show ppl import doesn't equal rice.

post your own ideas but please again be polite and no flame wars here

for the most part his ideas are the same as mine

there are expections and a lot of it is in the eye of the beholder, and different ppl have different opinions as to what looks good

but just because it is an import doesn't mean rice

Ok, I think his comment on the chrome V8 stuff was kinda crossing the line. I mean, there's nothing wrong with wanting to put cool/nice looking stuff on your car. Chrome V8 accessories is like how people put the little aluminum/chrome valve stem caps on their car, or and air freshener, or a new reciever. I just don't see how chrome stuff on an engine you can't even see is considered 'rice'. And I want to add, this all started in japan and I see it as an Asian kinda thing, just like baseball is an American kinda thing. When you see white american boys that don't know jack crap doing it, then it's something else. I'm part asian and I feel that the white boys that don't know **** about cars puttin glasspacks on their wimpy little SOHC VTEC engines are screwing it all up for people that actually know what they are doing. If I think of anything else, I'll post.

I see your point there

and yeah some of that chrome stuff does look good.

but then again I have seen some of it where it just looks cheap as hell

I am going to borrow a pic from mark a shields who has a setup with some chrome in it

my opinion is it looks good. he did it right. not so much it is way too flashy. but enough so it looks good. now if he chromed out everything and just made it so busy with chrome then that's not something I would say looked good

I have to admit there is a definite distinction between ricers and import guys. My friend has a 91 Celica GT-Four turbo AWD with some boltons... didn't get any respect until he WHOOPED a 95 TransAm LT1 with exhaust/intake.

I am a big fan of the import scene. I like both sides and have come to respect them both. I love import car shows more than domestic car shows (more fun! who cares about $10 cover at least you get wet tshirt contests, GOOD music, beat-boxers, entertainment!)... as well I think in terms of styling the IMPORT guys (not ricers) win in the styling department. I hate to admit it... but a lot of domestic cars are pretty hick around here. guys with ******s and that don't even wash their cars let-a-lone have a nice paint job with some simple 17" clean wheels.

I think it comes down to maturity and respect for other kinds of cars. LIke cultures there are differences, but if we can respect and acknowledge the attributes they all have we all win. I know it sounds a little cheesy but whatever. Some guys in my domestic F-Body car club get really mad/upset with import guys when they joke around, I just laugh with them and have a good time. I don't know why they get so mad???

Anyhow... it's late and I"m starting to babble. I think some hard-core domestic guys need to understand that the import thing isn't just a fad, it is here to stay, and the idea that 4 cylinders can't be powerful has pretty much been completely blown out of the water. There IS a replacement for displacement, it's called a turbo.

I love my domestics, the torque, power, sound etc. and I"m a student so they are quite a bit cheaper to mod than an import.... but we still need to all have respect for the other scene.

good point on that one

what does a turbo do for that matter?

shoves more air and fuel into a motor which it turn makes it act as though there is more displacement

I wish the term 'Rice' didnt completely destroy the GT Racing style. Its sad but it has already happened. Now anyone who tries to rep GT styling will be stereotyped as 'Rice' even if their car is fast. To me Rice is alot more than just some appearance mods. I'll agree with the guy that all those gaudy shameless mods ruin the whole look of the car, but I think for someone to be considered 'Rice' its alot more about attitude. People who really do think a big tip makes you fast, people who think really overdone agressive bodykits make you more aerodynamic, people who really do think boltons will run 12's .... to me thats Rice. Even someone with a completely stock looking car with an aftermarket muffler and a filter who thinks he runs 10's is 'Rice' to me.

If you want to make your car look gaudy and flashy, that's ok by me. Just don't pretend it's someting it isn't. If you put a big tip on your car, that's fine, just don't drive around at WOT all the time thinking it's a race car now. Along that line I've seen camaros with 4" tips. There's no way they have dual 4" pipe or enough engine to necessitate it. There's an old saying. If you can't race it, chrome it. That's why I'm straight up with everything on my car. I have a scoop on it and it's functional, but I also tell everyone it's still a 14 second car. I don't pretend I have a 9 sec pro street car. When people ask what engine I have I tell them, I don't make them pay to see it. That really pisses me off. The whole street racing scene has changed so much too since the rice started and the FATF only made it worse. If you want more money, GET A JOB, if you want to have fun, race your car. Don't be a d!ck about a hobby that I love more than anything else.

So if a turbo on a 4 cylinder is like a V-8, then what is equivilant to my turbo charged V-8, a V-12 or something??
But I totally agree with just about everything that has been said on the thread. If it's a true performance upgrade cool!! If it's a Fake non-functional upgrade RICE!!!

Another thin got think about is what the car was originally intended for. If you bought a Mazda RX7, it was designed to be a quick sports car. If you boght a Honda Civic it was designed to be a economy car! I feel that it would be cool for a few people to do some things to cars that they are not designed to do. I saw an Excursion that was running 14s. True it is cool to see one do that but if you saw thousands of Excursions, with body kits, and wings, running 17s and calling themselves fast because a few are, wouldn't it be like rice. What I am saying is, the Honda Civics, and Integras, when they were first starting to be modifyed, the owners were being unique. They had faste cars, and had qunique cars. Now any 16 year old kid with mom and dads credit card can have a car that looks like these and sounds like these "unique" cars for cheap. The problem with the import scene (nat all of them) is that the cars they start out with are slow. It is harder to get a Honda to run 12s than it is to get a Mustang to go 12s. The thing that seperates the true fast imports from the wannabes is the fact that to run 12s in an RX7 or a Supra it doesn't take very much!

People who ran FWD cars at the begining of the import scene, probably had ideas of being one of the only guys who had a fast FWD car. The true import followers realized this was a dead-end and went with the Supras, RX7s, 3000GTs, and others that didn't have all the problems with FWD. The rice crowd doesn't have the brains to figure out that it is going to cost thousands of dollars to go fast with FWD. They are the ones who feel a CAI, and a cat-back are the only mods needed to perform well. If you look at the true import sportscars, they know FWD is a dead-end and have gone with vehicles with rear wheel drive or all wheel drive.

In my opinion what seperates a ***** from an import is the design of the vehicle, the owners tatse in what the car looks like, and the performance of the car, and the potential.

i agree about the whole rice/import thing.

i think some of the imports look good if they are not over done. but when you double the weight of the car with stickers that is rice.

there are fast imports out there, and i respect those, because the owners are on a drug that we all take.......speed.

i like the styling of some of the fast imports such as the supra, 300zx, rx7, 3000gt and the such a bit more than some of the new domestics. lets face it guys modern day domestics are in a world of pain with their styling, they all look the same.

i think that when you are fast as he*l you can do stuff abnoxiously, (ie stickers, gfx, the such) because you can back it up. but if you think that stickers make you go fast....rice.

i dont think that rice is a representation of the car, it is a representation of the owner. if he is a coc*y little brat that had a shop do everything for him, and claims that he beats vipers in his civic, i have no problem calling him rice.

but i will never ever have any problem going up to a import guy with a fast car and say "hey nice car, you gotta give me a ride sometime" and hopefully he will do the same.

the sad part about the whole rice thing is that some of the styling cues i want to put on my car can make it *****, hey i like some of those rims. what about a functional spoiler??? and what about a sticker that has www.thirdgen.org on it?

It seems the more show, the less go. Or in my area anyway. The more wings, stickers, and appearance mods on a car, the slower it seems to be. Then the cars with few appearance mods (rims, tints, and maybe a wing) are the fast ones. Theres a TT Supra I've seen, all black, black rims, tints, and a wing. :hail: Looks totally bad ***

Then theres so many other imports full of stickers. Example- a green Del Sol, aluminum wing, exhaust, windshield banners (top and bottom), and stickers all over the front fender. My friend smoked him in his 95 V6 Camaro by 4 cars. Then the guy claims its all show.

I used to be very quick to callout rice. Until I started to get beat with my 2.8 by some dumb cars. I got my respect back after I got the bird, and was laughed at with the 305 and junkayrd ish exterior it started out with. I graduated senior year with the fastest student owned daily driven car (a buddy had a 68 le mans with a 350 and 4.10 gears, not driven to school much, but its probably beat me) and was damn proud of it. I was the guy to beat. I never raced, but the few smoky burnouts i did earned me the respect of the ricers at school.

Ricers elsewhere are terrible. I know a kid who is getting a maxima. I have a $20 bet going against him I can take him out. At one job, I dealt with mr. rice king. Talked to people about a cold air intake and exhaust could make a civic beat ANY american car. He declined rides in my car, and eventually backed out of the race he kept challenging me for. His sister with her "super fast civic" saw my car, and told rice king he was f-ing stupis to bet money against me with her car.

The kids in my neighborhood are bent on the fact their buddy with some japan spec motored del sol wil "s*** on me." Bring it on. These kids made fun of a 40 foot two legged burnout i did (not trying i might add). When I challenged anyone there to beat it, no one would or could come close.

On the other hand I know a kid with one of the most ***** looking accords. But, he has every bolt on imaginable and has thrown a cam in the thing. It moves a lot of air and sounds mean for a motorcycle engined car. He respects me and I respect him. His first reaction when I opened my hood was "holy s***."

I think a car should be based on how it was meant to be used originally. Like someone stated earlier a Civic isn't meant to be a 12 second drag car. I consider rear wheel drive to help define a sports car. But I only have a sixer firebird. I dont try to make it look really fast and stuff. I put exhaust on it to make it sound and look a little better but I dont full throttle it everyhwere

I dont know if I agree with the 'what the car was originally meant to be' theory. I've seen lots of cars that were obviously not meant to be fast do just the opposite. I know people get sick of reading about it here, but if someone knows what they are doing, they can make anything fast. Be it the guy with an older Honda FWD hatchback gutted with a hybrid B16 motor swap and a turbo or someone who took an old Pinto and swapped in a SVO mustang turbo motor ... If the car is fast then there isn't really much you can say. To me its Rice is defined by 20% how the car looks and 80% about the attiude of the driver. Soemone people just do whacky things for fun and they know it looks dumb but they thinks its funny. Some people go all for show and dont want to deal with engines breaking down or all the money needed to make them fast. Not everyone is about speed so its not fair to stereotype just because a car looks fast but its not. Heck look @ my truck ... Its lowered with a front spoiler, big wheels, freaking corvette taillights and a 2.2ltr inline 4 POS motor. I know its not fast and I dont pretend its fast but it does look cool and ALOT of people like it. So does that make me a riceboy? No. It means I'm into customization. For all you know the car could be setup for soundoff comps. But if I sat here and told you how my inline 4 beast with CAI and flowmaster exhaust can smoke vipers, then yes I would be a full fledged riceboy. Thats the difference to me ...

Alright, I agree with you. Just because it's an import doesn't mean it's rice. I'm actually really interested in one of those new 350z's.
But just for a smile, check out this simpsons ***** spoof page. It does have some language towards the end, but most of this stuff is pretty hilarious:

Hey, that's me! My dad bought this car when he was 18 and still has it. He took down many BBC Camaros, Chevelles, etc. with a 2.0 and 4 speed that thought he was "rice" way back in the day. Now it's had the 2.3T T5 transplant. How's 350 HP in a 1700 lb rear drive car sound to you? That's what it's all about. I don't care what car it is. If you can beat me, I'll give you respect. I also agree that if you set it up for looks, or sound, then that's cool too. I see a lot of T-buckets with SBC that can't get out of their own way. It's a show car, not a racer, and the old men driving them don't pretend it's a racer. Rice is all in the attitude of the owner. If he's cocky, bragging, ignorant, and can't back up anything he says then he's just a jerk. It's just too bad a lot of them drive imports (or maybe it's good j/k). There was a civic hatch on juice at Great Lakes last night with a carbon fiber hood, neons, stickers, you know the usual rice, but he ran a 14.4 on juice on street tires. That's good enough to run with my bird, so he got my respect. The guy was really cool too. He wasn't running his mouth, or blasting his music in the lanes, or trying to show off. Just a car fanatic like all of us.

Ah, Gee thanks. I didn't want to go overboard, then that's just more stuff I have to polish and keep clean. I'll be painting the engine bay here soon hopefully a flat black.
