350 IROC vs Merc. Cougar?

Today at a gas station, there were these guys that pulled up next to me in a '93 or something Mercury Cougar V8. I've got an '88 350 IROC. So we're both fueling up, and he starts trying to get me to race him for $2500 at his local drag strip (I was out of town). I'm not one to race, so I told him I didn't have that much money (which is true--college student!) and that my motor wasn't broken in. I'm just wondering if I passed up an easy $2500? His car was a little beat up and I couldn't even hear the motor running when he pulled up, so I'm guessing it's stock? I just had to laugh about that on the way home cause it seemed like the guy didn't even know what he was talking about!

Later,
Craig

$2500, either he has one hell of a sleeper, or he is on crack.

Well according to this site, and correct me if i'm wrong, but this is the closest car i can match up to show u: Keep in mind that V6 was standard, so it might be timed with that engine instead of V8.

1991 Mercury Cougar XR7

9.4 0-60sec

17.1 1/4mile

U would of handed his *** down big time!

Well, you should be able to take him fairly easy, but I don't know anyone who puts up that much money, and doesn't have something up his sleeve.

Don't let quiet cars fool you. Turbos make every car nice and quiet. Nice low comp, no overlab and the natural muffling. In my experience anyone looking for a race is looking to make money. Generally the uglier the car, the faster it is, because he doesn't have enough money to do the body too. Beware the primer grey sleepers.

There is one other answer. You follow him to this quarter mile track and he pulls a gun and his buddy hops in your car and your out in the middle of nowhere with no car. Just a cautious thought.

Why the hell do people always offer rediculous amounts of money?

Anyway, it could be a sleeper, depending on the year it's either a standard 5.0, a 5.0L HO, a 4.6L or a 2.3L Turbo or a 3.8L Supercharged.

The 5.0 HO is the same as the Mustang, but you said you didn't hear the engine running so i'm guessing it was a 2.3L Turbo (only offered some years so not sure). Stock 2.3's are slow as hell, but with some mild mods those cars can fly. Same motor as the T-bird Turbocoupe and the SVO Mustang.

Well if it was a V8 it only has 200hp and 275 torque but weighs around 3500 lbs so you should take it stock form. But we all know that he probably wasn't stock. But then again maybe he was a crackhead that thought you had a silly little v6 camaro.

Well, the way the guys acted, I don't think they knew that much about cars. Not to be racist or anything, but they were a bunch of crazy black guys. The one guy was like "I'll race your" pause as he looks at the car "iroc-Z against my" another shorter pause "mercury cougar." And I've got a basically stock engine w/headers and a flowmaster exhaust, and when I fired it up he's like "ooh, you got a build 350 in there." So, whatever...I think they were just crazy.

Craig

Im convinced I get picked on because people think my car has a girly motor due to lack of ground effects (broke them) and trans am decals (not enough money for them yet, but it is a real trans am). But anyways I was driving to work one day and had a V-8 cougar pull right behind me. He was tailgating me, and swerving back and forth. He burnsout behind me at two stop signs, so Im like thats it Im gonna show him whats up. I go from a stop sign, leave it in first and go like 10 or so, and he flies behind me and I floor it. A short bark of the tires and halfway through second he was waaaaaaaay behind. he followed me into work, he looks at me, i just grin and say its not a 305. That thing was not real immpressive. If it was stock you couldve ate it.

Well, I'm looking at that Edmond's car spec page. It shows two different quarter mile times for the '87 IROC. One is a 14.9 run and the other is a 15.3 run. The second IROC shows it to be an L98 car. I would presume from this that the first IROC would be a 305 car with the five speed. Were the 305 cars faster that the 350 cars in '87? A 350 with an automatic trans should still run at least as fast as a 305 with a stick, shouldn't it?

the official times for the L98/auto were still a few tenths faster than the LB9/5-speed, at least it was for the GTA's..

So then I guess a 15.3 is a little high for a quarter mile time with an L98 car.

I have a 87 z28 that had a T5 and 305 TPI and have outrun the late 80s L98 automatics on a couple of occasions. I have also run against a L98 vette of the same year and stayed dead even. The T5s gearing really makes a difference just like in the 5.0 litre stangs. And as far as the 15.3 quarter mile I can say when I was in high school during the late 80's the new z28s with the L98 where running right about there at the track here in Tulsa.

I'm talking track too. We have a drag stip here in town and I have always noticed stock (unmodified) cars always seem to run a few tenths slower that what the magazines rate them at. Maybe it's the 90+ temps and long waits in line to run. Or maybe it's all the scientific corrections publications like to do to the actual times.

What is you mph when running the 14.8?

The Cougar is either a 5.0 or a 3.8 supercharged motor (or a base 6 cylinder).

If its a 5.0, it could be stock, modified, a 351, a turbo...

If its a 3.8 supercharged, it could be pumped up quite a bit - 300hp tuned ones exist, although they are pretty rare.

Either way, the car would only run in the 15's (at best) with either motor stock, but could run well into the 13's if the motor was modified (enough to keep the stock sound).

oh ***, make me think back that far, lol this was like 3 years ago lol

it was like 94.3 or something like that.

***NOTE: I personally didnt run the car, it was the previous owner who showed me the time slip.

But eh, out with the L98 and hello 12's on a stock motor(times coming soon )
