My money would be on the Monte Carlo SS. Main reason is the fact that the 1984 HO 305 wasn't really that powerfull. The 305 HO in the Monte Carlo was post 1985. There were huge torque increases and they had alot more power stock than the 1984 HO 305. The bird is lighter but not by enough.

If I am wrong someone tell me. I am proceeding under the idea that the 1986 Monte Carlo SS would have a 305TPI similar to the 1985 and up TA's and Camaro's. Is this the case?

no stock montes were available with tpi. It probably has a quadrajet. I'm leaning towards the firebird because I think they're a little lighter. gotta love a monte though. either way it should be a good race.

Both cars had the L69, the Fbodies were rated at 190hp and the Monte at 180hp. I too would lean toward the T/A.

Well I thought the Monte would have had a LB9 or a L03 instead of the LG4. If it's got less HP and TQ then there is no way in hell he could outrun the lighter F-body stock.

i used to have a monte SS, great car, and it ran hard for what it was. i beat quite a few stock 305 f bods. it was awesome on the highway.
but i had little stuff done, i reworked the carb a little, super coil and k&n. that coil actually helped alot.

If I'm not mistaken, the Monte SS came with 3.73's. What did the TA come with? The 3.73 are what helped the Monte with that weak 180hp paper weight.

The MCSS will have 3.73s with the 2004r like mentioned, with the L69. Should run a 15.5-15.9 if its running well and stock.

The Trans Am will have lower numeric gears so the MCSS will beat it off the line, the Trans Am should come back though slowly and it would be close either way. The weight difference might be 200 lbs.

I do agree with ya there..Someone earlier mentioned the Fbody was lighter..I tend to differ..Most SS's weigh around 3400lbs..I here most people saying there Fbodys like a Iroc,, or GTA weigh more around 3600lbs or more. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think I am???

The auto Fbodies came std with 3.42's with 3.73's optional. So, if we assume the T/A has 3.42's, I don't think either car has a clear advantage off the line given the crazy low first gear of the 700R4.

As for weight, my loaded Iroc weighs 3400lbs, 3600lbs with me inside. The GTAs are the heavy wieghts of the 3rd gens. I would think that the pre-'85 cars would weigh less considering the smaller GFX, wings and no TPI junk.

I was under the impression the only f-bodies with such high gear ratios were manual, not automatics. The Trans Am I parted out, a 87' WS6 with the LB9 had 2.73's. I also didnt think any f-bodies had 3.73s, just the option on the 5 speeds could be 3.23's. Id rather have the weight of the TPI *junk* than the slightly lighter carb setup . Most MCSS's weigh about 3500-3600 depending on options. The base weight with no options (minus driver) weigh like 3,350-3,400 lbs, but most are relatively loaded with power windows/AC and in the last few years, t-tops.

No argument here, just trying to make a point.

The gear ratio info is all in the tech data on this site.
