so im stopped at a red light, coming home from Newark, when i notice the headlights of an Eclipse/Talon coming up behind me. the light turns green and this guy is REALLY riding my ***, then cuts over in the next lane and paces me for a bit. i didnt do anything (im guessing he wanted to run me from a roll), and he gives up and guns it ahead of me. then the light ahead turns red . ohhhhh boy... here we go. so we pull up to the light and i roll down my window and ask him if he wants to go. he agrees, and i tell him i cant run to my full potential cause of an exhaust leak thats making me run rich, and i spin to much on the street. he tell me id probably beat him anyway, so we just decide to run. the light takes FOREVER to change, and by the time it does my temp is beyond 200* (my car likes it at about 150). i bring the revsup to 1800 and prepare to launch.

the light changes and both of us are spinning. i pull ahead and by about 85/90mph i clearly had taken him. im not sure how many lenghts i beat him by, ill have to ask him when i see him again. wish i had gone a bit easier on my launch, anything over 1500 on the street and my rear tires go up in smoke.

so then im cruising at about 50 or so, when he comes up along side of me, obviously wanting to go from a roll. i agree, since he ran me from a stop. the signal is to go on the 3rd honk. he honks 3 times and we floor it. he puts about a car or 2 right off the bat (damn slow reacting auto trans) and we kept that distance until we shut down (i dont remember how fast we were going, i wasnt looking at my speedo).

i turned off further up the road and my girlfriend gave him a thumbs up. his car was quicker than mine from a punch, but i definately had him from a stop. maybe well rematch from a roll when i get my exhaust problems sorted out

BTW- the Talon is a 96 5speed car w exhaust, cold air, BOV, boost controller (set to 15psi), and an upgraded turbo w hard intercooler pipes

Good job, although there are people on this board who seem to think DSM's are unbeatable :lala:

 

Hey a tip for ya on the rolling starts. Look at the speedo and figure out which gear would be best and manually drop the trans to that gear. Then you are set to punch it. Nice story though.

Oh and if you ever want to see how unbeatable DSM's are race a 2nd gen rs or gs. That will show you something new.

 

do you know if it was awd or fwd? Just curious. a buddy of mine was cutting 1.6-1.7 short times last night at the strip.. completely wasted me every time

only time i like to start from a roll is either at 30-35 mph or 60-75 mph at 50 mph she don't like to pull that hard till it hits around 3000-3500 rpm.

last night i was testing out my slp catback when i raced this nissan 240 zx with a turbo (the thing was loud and sounds like he was running lots of boost). anyway from a 40 mph roll i let him get the jump and that thing pulled pretty well enough to put at least a full cars length on me, and so after about 85 to 90 mph i let off and he gave me the 4 ways

anyway my turn to get him back, we got a light (lucky me ) i loaded my stock conveter for all it was worth and when the light was green i launched my badboy hard, went through first into most of second i looked back and he was at least 2 cars back. so i am fairly confident i would beat him in the 1/8th but not too sure on the 1/4. i wanted to talk to him to see if he had anytimes on it.

Jokerman: i have raced a non-turboed DSM at the track... he went 17.8 to my 13.6. when we got back in line he asked to see my supercharger!

MTX: it was FWD, although ive taken the AWD ones off the line at the track. there i cut consistant mid-high 1.7 60fts, but on the street i probably get about a 2.0

Mad-Mic: yeah i shouldve put it in 2nd, maybe then i would have gone door to door with him. my Vettes not running at 100% however. im down about 20hp according to my trap speed compared to my timeslips from last year. the Talon guy knows this and we should rematch on I95 when i get the problems sorted out

even if you manually shift the auto down and try to go from a roll the auto is still worse than a manual. Everytime I race my friends mustang from a roll he walks away even though we trap nearly the same mph. from a stop with equal launchs it's dead even. It's weird.

 

no ****! i didn't realize i did this! damn cable modem was giving me a fit. they got hit by lightning a few nights ago.

i love racing from a roll. i raced my friends modded mustang from a 30 roll last night down rt 100. i pulled him2 car lengths easily to 90 mph. he was holding with me while i was in 1st gear and he was in second. when i hit 2nd gear i just started walking away.

what i do hate is running from a 40 roll cause i don't like dropping down in 1st gear that high rpm. i do like running from a 65-75 roll in 2nd gear. you just got to know your rpm range so you can run with him.
