I Now Understand Road Rage

As a note, I want to tell everyone that I am usually a very courteous driver. I don't tailgate, I signal, I let people in, and I don't sneak down the side of an ending lane, etc., etc. However, I have a temper, but I've always been able to keep it in check before. Not this time.

Okay.

I'm driving down College Parkway, it's about 2300 EST exactly. College Parkway goes from two eastbound lanes to one eastbound lane just after the college. There is a substantial merge area where the signs tell people in the left lane that they need to get over. During hours where a lot of traffic goes through, jerks wait right up to the end to merge - people
frequently "race" to try to keep people from cutting them off.

However, this is 2300 (11 P.M.). Night. I'm in the left hand lane, and just after the college, the only car in front of me moves into the right hand lane. There are now four vehicles in the right hand lane and I have a good quarter mile to pass them. I feel like
openning it up, WOT. I blow past the first three, and when I'm coming to the fourth, I still have PLENTY of time to get by - I'm going 30 mph faster than him. I have maybe 12-15 seconds. That may not sound like much, but count it off at 75 mph when he is going 45. It's a long time.

So before we even get to the squeeze, he hits the gas, but it's just not gonna do him any good. Or so I thought. His plan wasn't to outrun me - it was to kill me.

He swerves over as I get next to him, forcing me to slam on the brakes, and move so far over that my left tires are barely on the pavement. I hit my brakes harder and was about to cut hard right (once I slowed behind him) - you guys know how hard our cars can cut laterally, especially with Z rated tires. I hit my brakes, but before I can complete my move, he SLAMS on his brakes, and swerves all the way into the left hand lane - running me competely, totally, 100% off the road and aimed at a tree.

Luckily, I know how to fishtail. So, I'm sliding sorta with my backend sticking out to the left (in the grass/dirt). I cut the wheel left and tap up on the e-brake, which brings my rear end to the right, and onto the road. The rear wheels catch traction, and before I spin out, I pull the wheel right to get my front wheels on the pavement again. I'm still going 40 mph. He's 10 yards ahead.

I slam down into FIRST gear, then hit second and get up on his bumper flashing my high beams. My guess is that he didn't comprehend the severity of what he'd done - kinda a "be careful what you wish for", or he didn't expect me to come out of it. So, I go into the shoulder, and he makes a quarter-hearted attempt to
force me there. I cut into the left-hand lane (where oncoming traffic would be, had there been any), and start to get next to him, back off, get behind him.

I think at this point he realized I am crazier than he is, when I'm ticked. I'm a little less than a second behind him - tailgating, but not insanely. He, out of habit/reflex, takes a left into his community.

Bad move. I'm [explicative] ticked as hell and considering
homicide. Maybe. (Not really.)

He makes the turn into his community, and hesistates - cause he realized he screwed up. You never run home when you're being followed. I follow him up the street, he takes the speed bumps hard, so I have to slow down...but catching up is not a problem. I catch up until I have his make/model/plate #. Once I get it, I back off to about 15-20 car lengths - enough to let him know I'm serious, and not going away.

I follow him through this community for 5-10 minutes, as I calm down. If he stops, I will say with a dead straight face "Don't do that again, ever." and leave. He takes a left, almost completing the circle (it's a large set of several communities). He's heading back towards College Parkway, and has probably called the cops by now, otherwise he wouldn't be killing time so...slowly. He wanted me to stay back there. So, I pull a right - putting my signal on early, once I see he is going left.

I go down a little ways, and make a U-turn, hoping to see him on the way back...not sure why. I don't see him, so I go home where my friend is waiting. I tell him most of the above, and that I hope this guy is scared poopless.

We decide to go to Wawa ten minutes later, but we go
through this dude's community first (it's several dozen communities...all in one); but we're in my friend's car this time. We come down this street, see high beams, then normal lights, then the lights turn off...and the same truck (I think it is) pulls into his driveway. It's like he was waiting to see if I was coming back, and used his high beams on the cars coming down to verify
if it was a Camaro or not. It's hard to explain, but it was definitely shifty - he was facing the wrong way too, which meant he'd tried to check six at one point.

Tomorrow I will see if the truck's plates match what I got. If they do match, then this means I scared him royally...because about 20 mins had passed from when I left him, and came back with my friend. That may be enough to satisfy me.

Any suggestions on what I should do? In retrospect (which is slightly more mature than my normal judgement), I probably shoulda just sat back, followed him, and called the cops. That's what adrenaline, speed, and anger do to you I guess. Road Rage. I've never been so ticked off before, it's scary to lose self-control like that. Not that the guy didn't have it coming, but still. I'm just glad there were no innocents around.

So yeah, sit back and give it a few miles before you go after someone. Just my advice. I may have come out of it okay this time, but who is to say next time would be the same?

Just food for thought.

I really hate that phrase.

Later guys.

One time I was driving on the interstate and a bunch of trucks with teenagers in them surround my car. Two in each lane in front of me, one to the side, and couple in back. My windows were down, I had three passengers and a girl in the back who recognized the guy in the truck next to us and said the girl with him was talking on the phone and she heard her say they were next to a Camaro with four people in it. They were all going kind of slow (60), and I looked back and this was obviously holding up interstate traffic. I looked at the guy in the truck and he looked back, I kept moving forward to tailgate the truck in front of me then backing off. This didn't quit for the longest time until an exit came up. apparently they do that when they see a Camaro or Firebird but it was annoying.

To the author of the thread, he's lucky. Some people believe that running another off of the road deserves an ***-whoopin.

To the last post, that's easy man. Just slow down and stop if need be. A bunch of teenagers are not going to stop if they think you're pissed. Also, roll up your windows if that kinda crap happens. You don't want someone tossing food or other such objects into your car through an open window.

Well despite some things not actually being the law abiding or most mature ideas, you didn't do anything really stupid and what that guy did could almost certainly be construed as attempted manslaughter at the least. (should you be able to find witnesses) I hate 4-2 merges by the way. I can cruise in the left lane (that tends to be the one that gets merged into so i stay there and save my self the trouble) and will let people in all the way up to the end. Man, if i ever get stuck there i can never seem to get in with out damned near stopping. Then there are the group that at rush will fly up there in droves and then literally force their way over, sometimes regarless of the fact my camaro's nose is 3/4s of the way up their car. Just be glad the car and you are in good shape, give the plate number to the cops and be honest (minus some of the following the guy stuff except to say you got the number that way). They probably can't or won't do much, but thats the best you can hope for at this point. Actually to get charges on this guy the best thing that could of happen was for you to slide the car into a tree or something, just to get passersby and cops involved earlier.

You should write up a note that says something like, 'I know where you live...I'm watching you' and stick it under his wiper arm some night - soon.
Make him nervous. Every week or two, put a different note there.

Another point of veiw...

I was once chased down for taking a shotcut through some sage brush (it was a switch back, and and I followed and exsisting dirt road.. I wasnt going fast just somethign to do.. I was 18.. the Neighbor of the guy who owned that propert chased me down, he pulled along side me, cut me off (damned near t-boned him) I opened my door, and he pushed me so hard i went through my truck and landed on the passenger door. He threatened to kill me and my friends if we ever took that short cut again. The only reason he left, and quit is the three friends I had in the back.

Another time, my friend and I were gonig through town, he pulled in front of a nother guy and took a right hand turn in front of him, the guy had to reef on his brakes,it wasnt right, but it didnt hurt anyone. S
o the guy and his girlfriend folllow us, and screams at him to pull over.. we did.. the guy open franks door, and pulls him out, flops him on the hood and starts poking frank in the chest...frank gets hot, feels violated..flops the guy around, and continually rams this guys head into the car until he cant fight anymore, the whole time his wife/girlfriend screaming. Now we have respect, we would have took our verbal a$$ chewing said sorry and moved on, but this guys anger got the better of him, and he got physical. Thinking because we were kids he had the upper hand. He learned that day no to underestimate little teeanagers.

I''m 30 now, Because of incients like this, and the family I have with me 90% of the time I paack a pistol..I have packed for 7 years thankfully it has remained tucked in my front belt covered by my shirt (noone knows I pack). I havent had a single incedent since I got married and had kids.

But on the off chance I made a mistake (im not talking about purposley being dangerous). So If I had a guy run me down, for any reason on the road, and I felt for one second endangered or threatened, you can bet he'd be staring down the business end of a sub compact 32 loaded with hollow points.

Some people just don't like to be messed with, I am 32, I dont fight, don't argue, and don't flip people off. So by all means, don't chase me down and threaten me. You might not like what you find.

I'm not saying you're in the wrong at all..I am the exception.. if I cut somone off they got pissed and wanted to scream and yell.. that'd be the end of it let em vent .. if they wanted to take it further well there would be trouble..

I guess what I am saying is be carefull some people go out and look for trouble, they look to be confronted, so they can control the end result. Once you pull over a guy your pissed at, you might find you've distrubed the hornets nest.

With 3 kids and a wife in the car, when somone makes an idiot move, and runs me off the road, yes im pisssed, yes I want to chase em down and give them a friggen earfull.. what I do instead is get make model and license, then call the police..I just can't put my families well being at the mercy of somone who doesnt know how to drive.. if their agressive driving is it because they are weak in person, and have to use a car? Or because they like to make people angry to feel justified when it comes time to throw blows.

I am the hornet's nest. ::evil grin::

Thanks for all the advice guys, what I'm going to do is actually a variation of an old inside joke. I won't go into how it started, but I'm going to leave a type-written paper that simply says:

Soon.

In very large letters, and never bother him again. If he was hiding for 20 minutes last night, he's already scared anyway. But yeah, I shoulda just called the cops and told them what happened. You're right - nothing probably would've happened, but at least it would've taken an hour out of his night.

Thanks again guys!

1. If you weren't speeding, that incident may not have happened.

2. If it was me that got ran off the road and I wasn't in the wrong when the incident occured, and I got his plate numbers, we'll lets just say he'll get what he deserves.

Things like this is what makes me want to get an old multi-colored rust bucket chevy 4x4 lifted with big-*** tires, big steel bumpers and cattle gaurd and THEN let people try to cut you off and tailgate you! People tend to let these trucks by in fear of getting run over or hit.

Hey, at least you're ok, it could have been worse!

A few weeks ago I was driving around with my friends back from wendys, Going through a neighborhood, this v6 convertable mustang flys by me in the lefthand lane, and hurls an egg at my car, hits the passengerside T-top and makes a nice "splot" noise. Well, I was pissed, I chased this girl and her friends through a neighborhood onto some of the main streets. She started getting really irradic in front of me, swearving, driving on the sholder. A red light comes up, and we both stop, next to eachother, but seperated by a lane. The driver is petrified, not expecting me to run her down. My friend gets out of the car, and hurls his Jounier bacon cheeseburger, and a few honey mustard containers into her car (convertable was down). She flipped out, and started cursing at me, flipping me off. The light turns green, I turn right, she goes straight. I went home to wash my car, and have a laugh with my friends.
