1992 LO3 vs Me?

Okay guys my friend recently bought a 1992 LO3. The car is absolutely mint, bright red, clean as can be but doesnt have much done to it. He says 3" exhaust (stock manifolds), ported heads, and I believe thats all. He doesnt have it registered yet but after looking at it I got to thinking about running him. I think it would be a pretty close race but I am sure he would edge me out, what do you guys think.

I will be driving my 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. It has a 5.2 V8 with AWD. It was rated back in its prime at 15.4, but I find that hard to believe. I was hoping for a high 15 out of it, so would that give me any chance? I realize this is vague but I was more or less looking for what he would run in the 1/4 while keeping it a street racing topic!

Sounds like it'll be close. The L03 heads are really sucky and I don't see any amount of porting helping them out. I'd guess he'd be a high 15-sec car. If those ported heads aren't the L03 heads, could be quicker.

Hard to tell, to me they dont look like they have been off the car and with ported heads its hard to tell if the owner before never touched them. When the car is all registered Ill go for a ride and see what its like, as of now Im going by what i was told it had done!

You'll have the jump on him in the Cherokee by possibly 2-3 cars off the start, his only chance is at the top end. I'm almost certain with what you've told me he's got he'll have to do alot of catching up.

i have an lo3 right now and its dying but with my 700r4 i can light em up real good w/o any brakes... just mah the go pedal and hold on.. this is with berlinetta 14's with Dunlop qualifiers 235/60/r14.. id say dont under estimate the lo3 but if you want to have fun turn ur awd on and make him ssad with all ur 4wheel traction goodness

full time AWD... Gotta hate it ! Id much rather have 2wd and switch into 4.

The race hasent happened yet as his friend broke his hatch (I guess 1992 had power hatches to come down, and this kid slammed it shut and broke it) so now he is waiting to get his shifter!

completely clean out the jeep, run on less than 1/4 tank of gas and blow his doors off

I've had 2 lo3's, they really suck :lala:

Any 89-95 NP242 will bolt right in giving you 2wd-4 full time-4 part time-N-4 part time low (2.72:1)

Is the L03 auto or standard? Auto you will smoke him, standard it may be closer. The torque converter should stall at 2500 rpm on your GC, and should get you 83-85mph trap times which would be 15.5 at the best assuming your GC is stock and in good running condition.

His is an auto but does have a few tiny things (they claim P/P on the heads but everyone claims that because you cant check them when you buy it). The GC isnt in 100% condition so Id say high 15s maybe.

Hmm that tranny interests me, I hate the full time AWD, as the truck has been having issues! It seems to hop (in the front end) when taking slow turns, and after being driven a while. I assume its the AWD, or something related but its annoying!

Your viscous coupling unit in the tailshaft of your NP249 transfer case is fried probably about $1000 to change. The NP242 is just a transfer case, I did the swap on my now gone GC and it took about 8 hours.

I JUST replaced this damn tranny not more than a year ago ($1700), figures!

Well maybe I'll do that!

Regardless if there is minor work to the STOCK heads there are many many other issues with the LO3...it won't make a HUGE difference.

My money is one you, not by a huge margin but you'll win.

i dunno bout the 5.2s but i raced a 5.9 jeep once with my 91. we started from about 40-45, i kelt up to him till about 85-90 then he left me in the dust. my car is stock. if we raced from a stop i mighta been able to take him.

Good to hear, it sucks the kid went from an 89 LX with edelbrock heads and intake, B-303 cam, all the bolt ons, full exhaust and a nitrous kit to this car. I will admit the Fbody is much nicer looking and in better shape, but compared to the Mustang it is not fast! He might head up with me to the track sometime soon, so Ill post his numbers then!

Brian you're gonna get smoked. But if you win you've gotta come and race the SS in the mustang. Fair rematch to avenge the f-body loss.

LO3/swirl port heads suck even when ported.

You can beat 'em.

Ill have to let him know the heads arent the best. Is there anything decently cheap he can do to go 14s with it? It would be bad if he couldnt even see a 14 this summer!

Why is everyone talking about the heads? The exhaust is whats gonna give him the extra power...LO3s love exhaust wouldn't suprise me if it gave him an extra 20 hp. Tell him to come check out the TBI boards here, we'll have him killing jeeps in no time

The viscous coupler is located in the transfer case which is seperate from the tranny....so replacing the tranny is still a good idea since the 46RHE trannies tend to go anyway.

Im still trying to see if its in the budget now that the Mustang needs suspension and all . I think for now Ill tune it up and see if he will run me. If not he should have track times.

I told him about the board but I dont think he has registered yet. I try to relay any information I know to him, so he is being guided the right way, but we will see how the track treats him (our track is notorious for slower times then most others nearby)!

13.0 @ 103, and 12.7 @ 105 (105 was with a big headwind, 1/8 mph shows car should have seen 106-107). Yes the mph seems low, but its a combination of decent traction and what I would call good driving!

theres a few things like exaust(already stated several times), an e-brock or simalar style air cleaner, pullies.

but in my opinion.........best mod you can do to an L03 is to replace it with 327ci or larger

Funny you mention that, he just IMed me and left a message that said he is tryng to trade the car for a 5.0 Mustang, he cant take the LO3 anymore. Sucks he bought the car without asking me first, I would have gotten him into a better thirdgen!

I definately would have helped him, even though it doesnt look it, I have learned a TON here about thirdgens, and have no problems helping a Thirdgen owner out. But he never told me he was looking at them, and I was really disappointed when he opened the hood (not ******* the LO3 guys out there). My cousin did the same thing, but at least got an 86 TPI car, which had better potential. I'll have to see what he decides to do with it, he has been looking at Mustangs, but I wouldnt mind him getting into a better thirfgen, with my help of course!

He had plans to, but spent almost all his $$ on the car alone. He just cant afford to drop a new motor in now, especially since its his DD. Ill have to see what he decides to do, right now it looks like a Mustang but you never know with him!

Yeah this kid likes them better then Fbodies, but got the LO3 because it was a clean car with low mileage and a V8. Im pretty sure the car is for sale now, and he is looking elsewhere! Guess that race isnt happening.
