Pretty sure I have the HP to get there, but not the *****.
There is a short clip of it trapping 147.5 in a standing 1/2 Mile, SORC 1/2 Champ. Simple gear swap would put it over 200 MPH-top speed now is 170 at the rev limiter in 5th with 3.73's.

I think I should eleborate on what I was saying. Sure, there have been other F-bodied cars do it, but are they streetable? From those pics and specs, it don't look like it. I want to hit that speed then be able to bring her back down to earth and driver her to work. A REAL car that does 200+. I think the one Pontiac built was cool, but anyone can do it when you can throw millions of $$ at your project making an unreal amount of custom parts. I know it sounds silly to downplay those cars in my chase for speed, but in all honesty, they were never built to be driven....at least it doesnt appear that they were. Just to race and go fast.....
My project and quest for speed continues. I will see you on the flip side of 200 with some pics of me doin it then drivin her to work the same day!!!!

I believe he did what he said.
I busted 140 in a 4spd 75 modified TA. It was pretty darn stable up there too.
Also broke 130 in a 93 SHO several times and have seen above 130 in my Z so I have NO trouble believing the story.
I agree with the comment about comming down, it seems to take a loooooooooooong time from above 120.
If such a thing is possible, use proper discretion when pulling such stunts. (middle of the night middle of no where and pray no deer roaming around or you might get to meet Mr. Earnhardt sooner rather than later)

Well anyone who doesn't believe that a 3rdGen can do 150 is more than welcome to sit co-pilot in my stock '91 Z28. She's been over 150 on many occasions. To all the "speedo is incorrect at that speed" believers, it's not off by much.

A 200mph 3rd gen not streetable? Only if its a 305 without a power adder.
Seriously, with aero massaging, you can probably crack 200 with 425 to 450hp, not much of a stretch for a 383 or even a 350. I would think the best thing to do is transplant a 500hp LS1/LS6 into a 3rd gen and use that - its a lot lighter on the front end and is actually a really internally strong motor.

I had a quik question I wanna throw in here.
Cause im not all too brilliant with
the whole rear-end gears and whats good for what application .. So, I wanna know
I have 3.73s on a built Tuned Port motor
and what exactly is best for those 3.73s?
Street cruisin'?
I can push my car at 130mph on a freeway with no vibrations,
feels really good and easy to drive ..
as long as my tires are decent.
but, what the best gear for up-top speed?
naturally u wanna put your gears where your power is ..
but I dont have much clue on whats best for my particular application.

A 3.73 is a good all around gear with the TPI setup and the 700r4 trans. It has enough "get up and go" off of the line because it is a lower gear, but with the 700r4's overdrive it can hit some decent top end. You can go with a higher gear (smaller number) to get more top speed, or a lower gear (higher number) for more off the line.

i've hit 180mph with 4.10's......
there were SOME good points in this thread.....but most of the people calling BS have no clue what they're talkin about.
i topped 145 in a bone stock 88 iroc when i was like 17.......so going 180 in a highly modified car is easy.....especially with the power.
it had revs left in it at 180......but I didn't lol.
btw it was as smoooth as glass.....all rebuilt front end etc.
this is funny lol:
possibly because its a much newer car?? lol
my car has all brand new bushings/balljoints etc in the front end, plus eibach springs and koni red adjustable struts and shocks......its as smooth as glass like i already said.
and seriously people 150mph is not that big of a deal.......some guys in here are treating that like its some unattainable speed that would cause any 3rd gen to disintegrate...
please......do you people not have long straight stretches of highway???? get off the coach and go live a little......i promise you, go top 170mph if you've never gone that fast before......you've never felt anything like it.....but have plans after, cause your not gonna want to go to bed

stupid queston but why is a 4th gen alot smoother at 155 than a third gen?? Looks like a good IROC could run that fast without shaking like they do. I've had my 87 up to 120 a couple of times but that was about all I could push it

You're right 150mph in a 3rdgen is attainable. But his calculating methods are for ****. First the bike was "topped out at 170" then in a later post "the Gixxer speedo read 160". In both post his speed dropped approx. 10mph also, going from "in excess of 150" to "i was doing 150". He also bases his calculation on a motorcycle speedometer, an instrument well known for being optimistic. Add to that the stated fact that the bike has an aftermarket sprocket on it. Steveiguess, I'm curious as to how you "calculated that it would make it off 10mph at that speed for the sproket". What was the formula y'all used?
By his calculations I could say my car does in excess of 400mph. Because the other day a 747 was flying overhead and he was just barely walking away from me. And since 747's cruise at approx. 560mph, I HAD to be going faster than 400mph!
And I've been in excess of 170 on a '99 Hayabusa. (the speedo read right at 190mph) We're mostly "long straight stretches of highway" down here

hot rod i believe had a car hit 225 at the salt flats
moon disc wheels, very skinny tires, head light pocket covers and slammed with some ground effects. forget the power numbers but i think it was approaching 800hp. forget tho. car went 225 and thats the fastest one i seen yet

Maybe the GTAs are just more stable than standard Thirdgens? I've only taken mine past the 110mph mark ( Not really a mark since my speedo is digital and will technically read up to 199mph ) a few times but it never shook uncontrollably.
The 89 Formula I had before this shook like a beast after 90...

A formula may feel lighter at high speed due to the lack of the front GFX, but the rear wing should be just as effective on the formula as it is on the TA.
Worn/Leaking shocks will definitely cause issues with high speed stability.

Re: 150mph!!!
i have been up to 147 in my z28 according to my gps. had a lot left but yes it was too scary and i let off . thats not the car its a lack of maintence or replacement of parts. worn out shocks and front end parts was the cause of the shaking. i dont think 150 is too hard at all.

Re: 150mph!!!
Wow old thread.
My (not stock at all)89 formula350 has been past 200mph a few times. I was clocked once by a state trooper at 187mph and I had been slowing down for over a mile. (no ticket but he was pissed)
Heck every time I'm in it she hits 100mph at least once.
When the car was stock, it would peg the 140 speedo and keep pulling with nooooo problem at all. Id bet she was a 155ish mph car stock.
I don't know about the camaro but the bird 140 speedos are only labled to 140mph and stop at 145mph. They cannot go farther because they have stops internally. So a gps or radar gun is needed.

Wholly old post batman!.
I've yet to really get on mine, but I have had it up to 120ish several times.
I made 601 at the crank. I have a later lt1 t-56 and 3.70 gears, lots of weight removal and guess I'm well above the 175mph mark but not sure if i'll try it.
I have fullly upgraded suspension, driveshaft, speed rated pilot ps2 tires, still not sure I'd go all that fast

my both my 87 and 88 gta have seen 150 its not that hard you just got to be smooth with the steering.also the speedo on 99% of bikes has nothing to do with the sprocket its on the front wheel briven by that rotation.hell my moms stock 89 lx 5.0 mustang hatch would bury its 140 speedo bone stock it didnt even have an aftermarket airfilter
