Monte's Vs. Us

Any body know how a mid to late 80's Monte Carlo SS would fair against a 305tb and a 305tpi third 3rdgen.( Iam not asking about 3rd gen's with 350's because monte carlos only came with 305's I want this to be a fair theoretical race )

Most LB9 montes will beat a stock LO3 but lose to a LB9 f-bod.

arent the weights of the two vehicles about the same?

i'd say TPI with its superior torque will edge out the monte

and aerodynamics above 90mph will help also

Axle/Gears: good question...
This is the exact race I challenged my friend too! But he backed out.

Monte SS has the L69 and 3.73's, also weighs more.

I think the Monte SS cant beat an LB9 off the line, or stay dead even, but in the end the LB9 will start to pull.

And if its the LB9 with the L98 cam, it will win all the way.

As for the L03, it would probably lose. Mine with 3.42's and auto went 15.8.

A friend of a friend of mine has a 80-something Monte with an L69. I think what makes them so "quick" is the fact that most of the L69 Montes came with 3.73 gears, much better than the grocery getter gears that came in the LB9s, LG4s and LO3s in our cars. The LG4s are nothing special... would probably lose to an equally worked LG4 f-body since they are a tad bit heavier than our cars.

My friend has a Z28 with an L98 and told me the Monte might take him off the line but would quickly surpass the Monte after a few hundred feet or so. He has a 2.73 peg leg rear.

My '86 MC SS ran high 15's. It had 120,000 miles and the only mod was Edelbrock Headers.

Not to hijack this thread (well who cares really), but what year is the Monte Carlo in Training Day??
Thats got to be one of the sexiest rides in movie history, especially the front end. Not into hydraulics, but when they show it in the beginning, all wet...Luv It

*I THINK* the monte in training day was a late 70's, or VERY early 80's. Im sure someone can pinpoint the exact year. I really love when they're getting shot at and denzel just stomps on it and the tires just smoke. I wish my car did that!!

I have a similar question. MY parents had a 87 cutlass 442 since it was new, until my dad totaled it in like 2001. Now i know the 442 came with 3.73's, but i am not sure what size engine came in it (302, 305, or 307) or if it had the same engine as the monte. My question is, if the 442 cutlass did have a different engine, what do you think would win: my Stock LO3 with 48k miles or the 442.

And relating to the 442, 1987 was the last year ever for any olds to don the 442 name. My parents ordered it the last week they were excepting orders for them, and had one of the last 442s ever built (possibly one of the last 50). We carfaxed it around the time we bought my camaro and found out that only a month or two after my dad totaled it (light post came down on the roof) someone bought it out of the junkyard. They are pretty damn rare, and apparently, desirable to any olds/cutlass/g-body enthusiast.

Stock for stock? The 442. Better rear, gearing, exhaust, heads, cam and intake...

I don't remember any montecarlos having the l69. Thats the 190 hp 4barrel 305, my brothers 84 z28 has one great motor! Are you sure it wasn't the lg4 or some other version? What was the HP rating? I'm only asking because every monte i worked on or road in was a wheezing dog next to my brothers car ( as compared to other cars of the day of course!) The l69 in the 84's with factory 373's was a match for any tpi 305, as per my experience it was faster.

Yes, all Monte Carlo SS's came from the factory with the L69. I believe a dealer or two may have swapped in 350's but the only available engine from the factory was the L69. HP was close to the F-bodies but they didn't get the dual snorkel air cleaner.
