built 3.4 vs. roommates modded 305
so awhile back there was the debate of who would win a race, my built 3.4 or my roommates 85 T/A 305-wiend dual plane, edelbrock 600, a cam a bit bigger than stock and auto. well, the day after i moved out to PA with him, while i was suposed to be "breaking in" the new motor and clutch, we lined up, he stalled it up,i got ready for the light, light turned green, launched at like 2500 ,and by the time i was into 2nd gear, i had over a car on him, shifting early at about 4800ish. had him by about a car and a half by 70, and we havent raced since. 4 things...my est bypass wire was unhooked and still is(ICM is bad) and i have a vac. leak from a worn out throttle shaft, and i never set my tps voltage, i just kinda eyeballed it putting it back on and i blew my drivers side header gasket .since then i have changed the oil, and have brought it up to 5500 from 1st to 4th gear and this thing hauls butt! there is more in it, and then comes a dyno tune! i will get to the track soon, but this t5 isnt likeing the new motor and spec clutch, im gonna swap in a 4th gen t5 that comes with a 1 1/8" 26 spline input shaft. beats my 1" 14 spline

You laugh but which 3.4 is it? The one that came in the z-34 lumina in the early 90s would walk all over most 305's in the 80's and 90s except the 90s 305 TPIs. My L69 ran 15.5 stock and I drove a 91-93 z-34 lumina and let me tell you if it is the 3.4 DOHC motor that they are nasty for an late 80s early 90s v6.Also I would like to add never buy one because the luminas had big problems and recalls and if you have ever seen one of those motors in the luminas you would think working on an LS1 would be easy. Those motors are wedged in those luminas pretty tight.

my 3.4 DOHC is by far the best engine i've ever owned, piece of cake to work on compared to my piece of hell 305. it just looks hard to work on.
but i'd say 99.9% sure that he has a 3.4 pushrod from a later f body in it.

I had a built 60*3400 in a 99 Grand Am (intake/exhaust/headers/tune) that would do 15.0's at 90mph, so I guess its defintely possible that you can beat a whipped 305. The 5 speed doesn't hurt either. Now, get a cam, and the 99+ aluminum heads! There are a few Grand Am guys I know with H/C 3400's that are putting 220+hp to the front wheels and going well into the 13's.
