305 vs. Turbo 3000GT
I lined up with a Mitsubishi GT3000 (4cyl I believe) with a turbo kit about two weekends ago. Its a kid I see around, I'd raced him a few times in my SVT Contour, even until 40mph and he'd start pulling, but I usually shut down around 60 anyways, so they were close, but he would win. Now I've gotten my ***** back after being v8-less for about 3 years, and I've got a third gen again. I lined up with him by chance right when I showed up at our local cruise spot. Lights getting ready to change, I stall up to about 1900rpm, and walk off the line WOT with very little wheel spin, it was one heck of a launch. 2 cars, instantly, I'd forgotten how well a properly setup converter and gears car can really leave. I was still in front at 60mph, but he was catching. We raced from a stop 3 times, I murdered each time. Now, its time to spray this little 305 hard so it'll stay out front past 60mph.
Its just nice to have a website that lets us post up street racing stories, contour.org wouldn't tolerate even the thought of it. It feels good....

Sweet race. What year is that 3000GT? I thought they all came with V6s.

I'm not sure, I know it was boosted, could hear the turbo and bov, I assumed it was a 4 cylinder based on the sound. Perhaps it is a v6, I'll have to catch up with the kid and get some details some day.

All 3000GT's are V6's . They range from sohc 160hp,dohc around 220hp and 300-320hp turbo v6 and run 13.8-14.2 off the factory floor. What mods do you have done because that is a serious LG4 if it was the VR4.My friends dads would bet a stock LT-1 97 WS6 that ran 13.9 by just a little.

So are you saying he passed you after 60 mph each race or were you still out in front or what? In my book a real street race should last up to 80 to 100 mph. Where did you let off? You said he was catching you so did you just let off and declared yourself the winner just so he wouldn't pass you? I'm asking you this because you said your gonna spray so it will stay infront pass 60!
So if he passed you after 60 then he's the winner in my book of street racing, just my opinion.

I'd be interested to run from a 70-75mph roll. It would really depend on his gears, he'd be in third till about 85-95mph, then I think I'd start pulling, my car loves 4200rpms to 5500, thats where it really pulls its best. I'd bet he'd get an initial jump, but who knows.

either he wasnt racing, shitty driver, or it isnt a vr4. in my 305 tbi i raced a vr4 running a 130 wet shot and i beat him by 1 car length no way youre doing that on your mods you have now and his awd should outlaunch you all day long if he knew how to drive or if he even has the VR4 if not its FWD and thats why you outlaunched.

Right, like I said before, I'm not sure what the exact model was, I may have said VR4 in error, I do beleive the car was fwd, I'm pretty sure he was encountering some wheelspin. All I know for sure is that its boosted, and I thought it was a 4 cylinder, I know what a hi performance v6 sounds like, my last two cars both had engines half and 2/3rds the displacement of my Camaro, and both just as much hp. (the 2.5dohc in the Contour had nowhere near the torque *man-grunt* but the bolt-on 3400 in my Grand Am did.)
You were spraying the 130shot? What supporting mods? Times? I'm seriously considering a big shot of nitrous, it's a motor with only 20k, fairly good breathing, etc, I think it'll love nitrous. I know I'd love 300+hp out of a mild mannered 305.

You have a bigger cam, and a larger induction setup, better gears, and a posi over Vipershark, Your race is not only possible but feasible. The only real supporting mods you need for a smaller shot of nitrous is a good tune up with regular copper plugs and high octane, but headers, big exhaust, colder smaller gapped plugs, and sticky tires will only make it better.

Yes this is about the polar opposite of how Vipershark is used to racing, he usually goes from a roll and to high speeds, this guy was basically running the holeshot only. None the less, it's a nice kill for both of them, The 3000GT VR4's are almost super cars, they have E V E R Y T H I N G on them.

Yea, an all out race isn't really fesible on the streets we were on. I should say, isn't smart. It probably lasted about 6 seconds, maybe less, defintely not more. I've ran up to 90mph+ a few times out on these streets, but only if it was a close race, and I was feeling stupid. I've had my share of law enforcement encounters, I've deserved every one, but I try to be a little more reserved now, I'm not gonna risk a big ticket unless I'm proving a point. I was confident shutting down at 60mph with 2 car lenghts, you can't call that bs'ing a holeshot. I've been on the recieving end of that kinda race when I had my SVT and Grand Am, both were roll on monsters, especially on the highway, but not so hot from a stop, especially the svt which needed some time to get into the fun zone between 5500rpm up to 7000, when I'd shift. Each car has its strenghts and weakness, obviously the car I was running against (not likely an actual VR-4 from what everybody seems to be indicating, and I concure) was pretty weak from a stop, a highway encounter may have yielded different results, but that wasn't the race we were running.
That being said, with this new car, holeshot races are its strenght. Off the line I stay side by side with my buddies Grand Prix GXP (300hp v8, fwd, 13.90s) through first, I get out horsepowered by 50mph or so. There arn't too many cars, save a well driven AWD car or another well setup rwd car that would concern me for out launching, I just need to build some more motor to make the best use of the converter and gears I've got. Spray may be in future, as 1991CamaroRslow indicated, I've got a decent cam and breathing system, the car should respond favorably to spray. Headwork would go a long way this this car at this point, I feel they are the bottleneck. I know there are relatively low compression, I run 87 octane 100% knock free, even if I let the engine temps climb over 200. More compression and better flow would be the next step, but I can't really see staying with just 305 cubes, 355 or maybe a 383 wouldn't cost that much for the return in power it would yield.

If it's a turbo then it's most likely a VR4. That or the kid installed a turbo on it.

I'm willing to bet it was just a turbo kit if it was spinning it's front wheels. I've driven the non-turbo and that thing was a dog till you wound it out. Friend of mine used to have a twin turbo VR4 and holy moly did that thing move. He sold that and got a Viper, that was a whole different experience riding in that.

That does sound pretty bad now that I read it, let me rephrase, The 3000GT VR4 is Mitsubishi's attempt at a Supercar, there you go.

like it was mentioned before, the VR4 factory turbo 3000 was an AWD car.
