Drag-Racing with a manual

Might be one of the more "obvious" questions ive asked on here but....

What do YOU do at the end of the track with a manual transmission?

I havent put in much racing time with my T56, and the two runs i did, didnt go too well. Im referring specifically to the "decelleration" part of the race.

Do you leave it in gear until youre sufficiently slow enough, or do you pop it into neutral and go hard on the brakes?

I did the latter last time, and my mechanical choke on the Holley 650 DP decided to close. The car shut off at about 60km/h VERY VERY close to the end of the runway. Luckily only one of my tires grazed the ditch as i fought the steering to turn in...... Ill be tie wrapping the thing open next time i go

But im just cuirous what the rest of you do and why?

Well, I'm TPI, but I just leave it in 4th gear and step on the brake pedal just enough to slow the car down. Our local track has a decent shut down area so by the time I get to it, I can downshift into 2nd and make the right turn to the timeslip shack.

Re: Drag-Racing with a manual

ok cool. I just wasnt sure if its bad for the valves in a gas engine to load it like that.

Our track has a pretty crappy shut down area, its INCREDIBLY bumpy, and i think its actually less than a 1/4 mi after the line. At the end theres a fence, with a ditch in front.

Supposed to be an NHRA track, but i think its only 1/8 mi NHRA "approved" or sanctioned, or whatever youd call it.

I toss it in nuetral... but my car doesnt stall so I just slow down, toss it in 2nd and come off the track.
