Gears, exhaust, DRs, free mods... get everything used and take it to a good track in good air with a good driver.

it wont be cheap unless you go with nitrous

assuming its an auto/305 with 3.23 posi gears, it should be a low 15 sec car

youd need some kind of stall converter (around 2800 stall speed) and DRs to get a good launch. thyat should net you mid 14s with no other changes. expect to pay around 700 - 1000 for a decent stall converter and a set of sticky tires

next is going to be full exhaust. Long tube headers, a custom ypipe, and a 3" exhaust system. look to pay between 500 and 750 for a full exhaust setup

finally, do some tuning and free mods. get someone to burn you a custom chip. these will probably set you back a few hundred more

so you could run high 13s with boltons costing around $2000 (if you buy all new parts, used parts will be cheaper)

or you could buy a wet nitrous kit for $500 and call it a day

small v8 needs high rpms...so low geared posi, soft rear suspention, remove front anti sway bar,big cam, woked heads, worked intake, used parts are great if you know who you are buying from and what you are buying.

Sorry, its never gonna happen for cheap. It'll take either a boatload of nitrous, which will eventually break the engine, or you'll need to swap the engine for something better and faster.

An '86 IROC TPI is a high 15 second car. It has the flat-tappet peanut cam in it, good for 190 HP. You cant pick up 2 seconds in any car for cheap.

Fast
Cheap
Reliable

Choose 2. Basically if you want a 305 to be "quick" you will need to do a whole lot. I have a fairly healthy 305 but to get it the previous owner had to do headers, cam, AS&M runners, Edelbrock base, ported plenum, flowmaster 3 inch exhaust. Its putting out 216 horsepower at the wheels. If all that had been done to a 350 then it would be more worthwhile.

Who's dyno was this run on? Been to any of the tracks "nearby"? (I use the term nearby lightly).

Bristol Dyno in east hartford before they went out of business. Nope i have not taken it to the track ever. I just did a rear end swap that would not really help me at the track anyways lol (3.42s to 3.27s). I just didnt like the rpms on the highway and i dont race really so i gave up a small amount of acceleration for a better cruising rpm. Not to mention i picked up disk brakes in the process.

Re: how to make a 305tpi go fast cheap???

it wouldnt be too expensive unless im giving the 305tpi too much credit im kinda fuzzy on its stats.. but 4.12s work the intake and heads as said a set of 1.6 rockers would help ditch the a/c and get an electric fan if it doesnt already have one a stall costs around 3-400 bucks a cold air can be made cheap via autozone lmao.. should hit 14s with them mods.

Yeah sad to see Jonathan go, but he needed to spend more time with his daughter and family. Great guy though, still talk to him some.

I had my '86 LB9 car in the high 13s with no power adders. ALuminum vette heads, small cam, headers, 2800rpm converter. not rocket science. will cost you roughly $2K

you couldn't be more wrong about a 305... They have a 3.73" bore that shrouds the valves and inhibits flow. A 305 will not breathe very well at high rpm.

A DZ 302 or a 327 is a different story because they have a 4" bore.
