Who would win? My 86 Camaro Z28 305 TPI auto, 3.42 posi. Or a Regal GS with a supercharged 3.8 CAI and open exhaust.

agreed. the Buick is basically the same thing as a GTP Grand Prix... maybe a tenth or two slower due to different gear ratios (i think). regardless, that car should be in the high 14s with the mods listed
if alls you have done to your peanut cammed IROC is 3.42 gears, youre looking at low 15s at best

If only you had a slightly modded 350 you could walk this guy.
I have two 350's i could drop in there but don't have the extra money for the insurance for a car with a non stock engine right now.

Why would your insurance go up?Member
lol i don't think my insurance company knows anything other than my type of car, year, and VIN, but then again i only have the minimum.

just do the race n see. your insurance shouldnt go up they shouldnt know what you do to the car as far as they no its just a 305.

I think even if you had a 350 (Pre 88) You still might get beat by the regal.
My 96 bird is just as fast as my 87 GTA I previously owned. (TPI 350)
(Both are mid 15 second cars stock)
Them S/C'ed 3.8's are pretty tough, Specailly if hes got mods.

your GTA mustve been out of tune or you got a horrible 60ft if it only ran a mid 15. thats what stock, peanut cammed LB9s run. any B2L 3rdgen should be AT LEAST a high 14 sec car. good drivers have even gotten low 14s out of them box stock. no GTP or Regal GS can touch that stock for stockOriginally Posted by 96v6bird

theres at least a 25hp and 85ftlb difference (87' GTA: 225hp/325ftlb vs 96' 3.8: 200hp/240ftlb) in power between your two cars and they weigh the same. the GTA has to be faster

My GTA was bone stock but, Honestly I never got to run my GTA. I'm going by stock times from Stock timeslip sites.
BUT I will say Stock GTP's and GS's run high 14's stock. I've seen it. Hell I've seen bone stock n/a 3.8's run high 14's with just a tune. This was a newer Grand Prix.
His 305 doesnt have a chance IMO. Maybe if it was a modded 350 L98 but not a 305.(going by his mods and previous comments)

well, most "timeslip" sites are not reflective of what the cars are actually capable of. for example, most websites lists L98 Corvettes as mid - high 14 sec cars, but i got my 89' to run 13.9 when it was 100% bone stock. most of those sites dont go all out at the track... such as letting the motor cool, deflating the tires from street pressure to increase traction, running with a 1/4 tank of gas to reduce weight, stalling the factory converter instead of just launching off idle, icing the intake manifold, etcOriginally Posted by 96v6bird

yes, with a good driver, the supercharged FWD cars are capable of high 14s. thats pretty much the best case scenario (14.7 or so). a 350 TPI 3rdgen, when driven to its full capabilities, will do lower 14s (14.2 or so)
alls im trying to say is that if the poster HAD a 350TPI motor, it would NOT need any sort of mod to win against a GTP or Regal GS (or the later Monte SS) if both cars are driven with the same skill level. ive already stated about 10 posts above, that since the OPs motor is NOT a 350, and instead has a peanut cammed LB9, he stands no chance
oh well, I'll try it and see what happens...

Yeah. I got ya. I'm just saying these 3.8's are stout in stock form... Even better when modded. Originally Posted by tpivette89

i agree 100%. GMHTP got a base model 98' V6 5speed Camaro to do a 15.1 at 92mph bone stock (i believe they pulled the air filter and serp belt). id LOVE one of those cars for a DD, or even as a racecar to surprise a few people and see how far one could go with modsOriginally Posted by 96v6bird

i did own a GN a few years back so i know all about how well these motors respond to mods. damn i miss that turbo shriek... had to sell that car to buy my house

I was going to mod my '96 since I was getting a new motor put in but EVERYTHING for this engine is double, Nearly TRIPLE the price of basic V8 stuff.
300$ for a decent cam
200$ for a dbl roller
4-700$ for a stall verter
700$ for LT headers(custom)
These 3.8's can be as fast as anything out there IF you got the $ and will to spend dbl to triple the price of basic v8 builds.
I wasnt willing so I'm cheaping out for my '83 bird.
lol
