lost to my gfs 06 cobalt lol
yeah i lost
but i completely expected it. i knew shed outrun me, i just wanted to see how bad she would.
her car - 2006 Chevy Cobalt 2.2L stock
my car - 1988 Camaro Sport Coupe 305 open element air filter 700r4 with completely stock engine (heads, cam, etc) holley 600 tuned for gas milage 2.73 gears on a peg leg.
okay so its about midnight, 65* outside and were leaving my friends house, and all i got is country road after country road, so i told her pull up next to me and ill see what she can do. i threw mine into low and so did she. counted down 3, 2, 1 go! we both start going, i had to roll into the throttle so i wouldnt spin tires. i kept up with her great in 1st gear, it was a dead even race, shifted to 2nd and she pulled to the rear of her door, but she SLOWLY pulled away, shifted to 3rd and her rear bumper was to the front of my nose and she pulled away a little quicker, but not much. shifted to 4th and she pulled a bus length on me. it seemed that it shifted REALLY early, i feel i couldve gotten another 500 rpm before it shifted, but unfortunately i cant control it. got to about 60 and she slowed it down and just for giggles i kept goin. got to 115 and was climbing but i shut it down.
she kicked my a$$ but i was just curious to see how bad it would be. kinda sucks to lose to a 2.2L but my car is slow as hell lol.
ive got a 1985 IROC posi 3.23 gear rear end waiting to be put in, just been to busy to put it in, and i think if i unhook the TV cable, i might be able to get her. what do you guys think? i had the tv cable unhooked (it actually unhooked itself) and it was (felt like) a rocket. it shifted later and when it shifted it pulled itself into the shift instead of just a normal shift. i would never leave it unplugged but i think a one time use wouldnt hurt anything for sure.
btw shes been gloating all night lol. but its okay
when the 355 goes in ill shut her up

3.23 posi goin in this weekend, its not much better but it is better than 2.73. and i guess i forgot to add i have headers (nothin special) and a 3" into y pipe and out the the back with a diaper on it. (previous owner put exhaust in) but along with the new rear end goin in, im putting true duals that stops right before the rear tires with glasspacks. i know glasspacks arnt a 'performance' muffler, but its loud as hell. if you aint fast then at least sound good while driving slow

you have to act like you let her win
"Just keep saying "
"you're really good driver, You beat me fair and square,"
"i didn't even hold back"
and then she'll think you did!
and BAM!
you're the man in the relationship again.

yeah me too all i did was remove the smog pump, cut holes on the plastic under the air filters and chopped off the exhaust after the catalyst but not much of a difference until i did a tune up which looked like this car never had before. oh i forgot i got a bad *** fuel pump for later mods but doubt that does anything to increase power

hell yeah those things are light! they weigh like 4 pounds. i got a new intake and upped my timing a little. on and i realized that when i 'installed' my 4th gen console, i put it up to far, so instead of starting in 1 i started in 2nd. prolly better since i would have just spun the tires......well......TIRE. but i feel like my car really left something on the table out there. maybe bumping up the timing and setting my carb for more of a race run, and gettin that rear end in then ill be good. im on a mission to kick her a$$!!

You'll get her sooner or later. If need be, a little giggle juice never hurt anyone...
That 3.23 rear is really going to help though. Smoke her off the line then let off the gas real quick.
If it really comes down to it, put a towel in her intake and cut off her air supply. That SHOULD give you the upper hand

Are half your plugs not firing or something? I thought our camaros were faster than a cobalt, it's not even the SS right? I would figure a V6 would probably lose, but a 305 V8?

That's off of some chevy cobalt site that posts specs. Our 305's have 170 bone stock HP, and 235 ft/lbs. (I believe) of torque. I just don't see how you lost, maybe because you guys had a rolling start?

Re: lost to my gfs 06 cobalt lol
well cause my 170hp 305 has maybe 135 hp to the wheel. its only got 2.73 gears and some horrible flowing heads. the engine is out of an 84 van. not a camaro. the engine is DIRTY. it has sooo much sludge in it its not even funny. i pulled the intake off to swap intakes and i could believe what i saw. same with the heads. those cobalts are quick little bastards. so all in all im sure its got much less hp than what its rated. the engine is 25 years old, compared to her 3 year old engine. rear end is stock and is also 21 years old. the tranny was rebuilt but its not a performance tranny. at WOT it shifts at like 4500 and hers shifts at 6500. i raced her a few times, and if i can hook up and i can pull a half car on her till 30 mph but when mine shifts to 3rd its like i hit a brick wall. 305 dont have much top end torque what so ever. so i can easily see why i won. im sure with a crate 305 and a rebuilt or brand new rear end with the 2.73 gears id prolly beat her. its just the age of everything. this car was taken care of like SH*T so its not what it should be by all means. ill check back in after i do more mods and we'll see if i can get her.
with my car when we start going i have to really ease into the throttle unless i can hook up and she can just nail the throttle and not spin at all. most races are won by the very start. and if i struggle there i dont have a chance. ill race her again tonight and see what happens.
to be continued....

Ah, I wasn't aware that your engine was out of a van. They put different heads on those than the ones they put on our camaros?

Re: lost to my gfs 06 cobalt lol
yes the tv cable is hooked up properly. and i couldnt tell ya the heads number, but ill have to go off your word on the casting. it is shifting very early. it has the stock torque converter in it which is prolly a 1300 stall or so. im sure that aint helpin nothing. i now have an edelbrock 600 with the HEI vacuum. 8MM accel plug wires.
any reason why it shifts so early? it shifts fine when im just cruisin around. shifts around 2200 and im going 60mph at 1600 RPM idles at 1000-1100.
i know what would beat her though!! A F*CKING 350!!! need to quit messing with this 305. i have a 350 in the garage. 010 block, with 882 heads. are the heads i got better than the 882 heads? only reason i havent put the 350 in is cause its rated at 180hp (same as 305) and i wouldnt be gaining ANYTHING. which is why im lookin for good low-mid torque heads and savin for my cam. would the heads i got on this 305 be good if i did a port and polish? much cheaper than buying new heads. id like to go vortec but think im gonna stick with regular.

Re: lost to my gfs 06 cobalt lol
alright guys i raced her 5 mins ago. raced twice... annnnnd i beat her. i got her pretty good on the first race.
okay so i went out there and heated up the tire. its not a hp problem, its gettin tires to stick. first run i got her on the jump tires still spun pretty badly but i jumped to a length and popped it in in 2 and kept going, she was at my door but wasnt catching. got up to 60 and shut it down. i beat her though.
2nd run i warmed my tire up again but as soon as we went i spun tires till 30 mph and she was gone. she puts the pedal to the floor and just goes, no tire spin at all. i get on and just spin spin spin. so enough with bashing about gettin beat. its just no grip. if we got on the track id eat her up. car still shifted at 4000 rpm though. gotta fix it.. its horrible. yes tires would help, but on a highway with lots of rocks and dirt it wouldnt help enough to matter.
