How should I launch with 700-R4?

I have a '87 ROC with the 5.7 and the 700-R4 auto tranny. If, theoretically, some ***** rolls up at a stop light and wants a go, how should I take off? Should I just get up on it in Drive or Overdrive? Or should I shift up manually through 1-2-D-OD? The stock shifter kind of sucks for quick shifting.

with the stock shifter just leave it in drive. if u got the cash, pick up a B&M mega shifter so u can manually shift. Makes a big difference.

The stock shift is just FINE. It doesnt matter how quick YOU can shift (with a megashift or a stock shifter), because the transmission will still shift about a second or AFTER you move the lever to the next gear

When I race... I put the stock shift in the 1st. Do a SMALL burnout to heat up the tires and get the debris off of them. Start at about 1200 RPM or so. Ease into the throtle, give it about 1/2 throtle for the first couple of seconds then mash it to the floor. Of course if you car doenst have enough torque to spin them off the line then you can just floor it. OR if you have DRs or slicks you can just floor it also. I shift my car at 6000 RPM or so. Nobody can take me off the line using this method. Not even a modded, 150 shot, slicked 5.0! LOL

Even with my L03 I couldn't just mash it at the line. You need to hold down brake (duh) and give it throttle the more you give the faster you take off (if you have traction). Be careful with the torque converter, too much and you WILL break it.
Manually shift it, NJspeeder has a stock auto and the Lo3, he runs 14.2/14.3 shifting himself and 14.5 when it shifts itself.
You also want to shift the trans when you reach your power peak, this way the trans will shiftabout 400rpm delayed and you'll "fall" back into your powerband in the next gear. This is how you drag. Good luck.

HAHAHa, if it took my trans a second to shift after i moved the stick it would be time for a new trans! Buy a shift kit and a ratchet shifter, then see what kind of times your running. Trust me, it will drop your ET.

I agree the shift kit truly made adifference in performance,my OE trans was nothing compared to the one with the shift kit, goes right through the gears with no hesitation,i love it,as for a ratchet shifter,i am still contemplating if i should and which one.

The transmission still doesnt shift EXACTLY when you move the shifter up, especially in higher gears like 3rd or 4th. If it's not a second it's a least half a second after you move that shifter.

On a sticky tire, I footbrake and bring it up on the converter to about 1300 RPM.

When the light comes down, I give it 1/2 throttle for the first 20 feet then lay into it.

Using this method, I got my IROC to run a best of 13.98 @ 100 MPH on a G-Tech.

It takes practice. And every car is different. It depends on the power your making and the way the car hooks up.

I always manually shift mine, the max my tranny will shift at is 4500rpm, but I like to bring it up to 6000 in first and 5500 in 2nd and 5000 in 3rd.
my trans usually shifts immediatly when i move the shifter, except OD, it takes about 3-4 seconds to shift, but it's got that stupid 3/4 throttle kickdown thing. but i don't race in OD.

I'm not much of a racer, only raced once.. I have a 305 TBI with auto tranny and when I raced I just raced the whole thing in OD and won. I'm going to try shifting through the gears manually, when should I shift so I don't break something? Anything I should know NOT to do, cause I really don't wanna mess anything up. Thanks
