The celicas have a 1.8L inline 4 and they make around 180HP according to R&T. I just looked up the numbers and it syas the 0-60 time is 6.9sec and 1/4mile is 15.4@91mph.
About beating him, I think it should be a good race. I raced one in my automatic 86 305 TPI T/A (peanut cammed) and I won cause the guy couldn't drive stick (I have 2.77 gears).
Your car wan't peanut cammed and you have better gearing so I think you should beat him if you hook up. Race him and let me know.

That Celica is a hard car to drive fast. I just can't get used to the idea that I can rev it to 8000RPM and that it has 6 gears. I've driven two, and their gears are so close together (very short throws) and the feeling is so vague that you could very easily miss a gear in that car. BTW, you should be able to beat him if you launch well.

I beat one 4 times consistently. I toyed around with him so much that he finally just left me alone. He wouldn't race me from a light, only from 30mph up. So I let him have it. I had a passenger and a full tank of gas too but I still beat him. I'm not talking about just barely managed to beat him, I'm talking like several car lengths. I would have ripped him up from a light because my car is a lot quicker than his out of the hole. Those 300lbs of torque come on real quick. The guy knows how to drive and shift properly. He also has a beast of a Nova that eats 2001 SS's for breakfast. The guy basically knows his ****. But he fell to my lowly IROC
. See my sig. It's an auto, peanut cammed, blah blah... but I still took him out. You got a stick. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

'88 IROC 305 TPI
Crappy 700R4 slushbox
Gutted airboxes
180 degree T-stat
Advanced base TPS voltage
Relocated IAT sensor
Momo steering wheel (gotta luv it)
Ram-air setup coming soon
Flowmaster muffler (puke)
Taylor SpiroPro wires
Accel cap and rotor
Ported plenum
Kills: '94 Z28, Olds Aurora V8, bunch of Mustangs, T-birds, ricers, and others who assumed a 12 year-old car would be too slow.

I killed a celica gts easily. it was one of the newer ones. i dont know if it was a stick or not but it had all the ground effects and asthetics. Anyway, he was playing around with me on the freeway. he would slow down then speed up everytime i would get close to him on the side. after the fourth time he did this, i dropped to drive and pounded it. i left him so fast that he never knew what happened. so i let off the gas and saw that he was catching up pretty fast. so when he was close enough i did the same. dropped to third and slammed on the gas again. i did this about 3 times, it was no competion. now he knew how it felt when he was doing that to me. pretty damn irraitating when i know i could take him and he kept slowing down and waiting for me to catch up. silly of him to think he could beat me. feeling sorry for him i finally gave up and he passed me looking all pissed off. he never slowed down after that to let me catch up. and as you can tell from my signature, my drivetrain is basically stock. i have to admit, that was pretty fun though. it only took me half the time to get home that night too. lol
