How to launch an IROC-Z with stock suspension and 2.77 gears??
It's an '89 Iroc 350ci with a 700R4 trans. Running on the stock suspension and 2.77:1 ratio in the 9-bolt rear. I have heard to bring the RPM's up to about 1000 and just nail it. But doing that I just spin like crazy and get wheel hop. I tried this at the track last year and was pulling 2.2? to 2.3? 60ft times on street Goodyear Eagle GSC-Z rated tires with real good tread. It has only basic bolt ons like headers and catback, ported plenum, and some ignition work, so its stock. I was running in 90 degree heat and pulled a best of 14.2 at 99.4MPH. I did notice that I was running out of RPM's at the end of the 1/4 and had to pull out before hitting redline on every run. That can NOT be right with 2.77 gears!!!Is it possible that I am spinning to much and losing most if not all of 1st gear? How should I launch? I was thinking bring the RPM's up to 1000 and slowly bring the gas to the floor till it gets going and then just hit it the rest of the way.... How does everyone here launch with an auto????
Thanks!!!
Thanks!!!
I have the same kind of car you have and with stock suspension with the exception of a panhard bar.
I race at the track by just idling at the line and hitting the gas pedal all the way as fast as I can. With this way I get 60' times between 2.01 and 2.12 with no wheel hop.
I also have 2.77 gears and buy the end of the track 1/4 mile I still have plenty of rpms left at the end. I am nowhere near the red line, I think may be 4000 rpms.
I also think that you don't have 2.77 gears if your hitting the redline at the finish line.

Stock means it is the way it came when bought, u could say its almost near stock but not stock. With the right conditions, u are going to get better than stock times with those. Just wanted to say that.

You said you were running out of RPMs....
Your trans may not be upshifting the 2-3 and you're crossing the line in 2nd.
Back to the topic....
Launch at 900-1100 RPM, but only leave at 1/2 throttle until the car gets moving, then flat peddle it. You will cut a better 60ft. and probably get a 14.0 at the same time.
Then again....you could always buy some real tires that will hook.

Ski89Z28:
I am 100% sure I have 2.77 gears. I did the 70MPH in D and it was spinning at about 2800RPM's. I also checked the RPO codes and it said it was a 2.77 rear. I also had the single cat exhaust.
IROCZTWENTYGR8: Ok its not 100% stock but I have only basic bolt ons so its very near stock.
IROC5.7TPI
The trans is upshifting into 3rd. All the shifts are firm and there is NO slipping. I will try a different method of launching. I was thinking more of 13.8-14.0 with that MPH.
Anyone else have a good way of launching? Could it be possible that I am spinning too much and losing all of first gear? Would that make sense???
Thanks!!!
