its something usually tractor trailor drivers do, basicly when u hit the clutch to shift from say 1st to second u shift out of 1st into neutral, let off the clutch while in neutral and depress again to go into 2nd. It just insures the vehicle goes into gear with out grinding....

this is the way it was explained to me: It helps off the line mostly. What you do is when you take off, let the clutch out quick, but you will probably lose traction doing this. You depress the clutch again, so that you are now rolling. Then you let the clutch out again. The idea is once you are moving, its harder to lose traction so you can give it more gas. You have to do all this really quickly, since you are racing while doing this.

double clutching just helps align the syncros so its easier on the tranny.

double-clutching is completely unnecessary on today modern synchro-mesh transmissions. Which goes to show how misinformed the "fast and the furious" really was..

Onefine hit it on the nose. Using the clutch to try and keep from breaking the tires loose during acceleration is called riding the clutch. If the fast and furious said something about doubleclutching while drag racing then that is probably some slang started by some ignorant a*******.
