um, were getting off subject a bit here

so to recap, I think auto for drag and stick for track.

I like sticks and will run one, until I ave to go to an auto! After having both in the same car it is completely different.

With the auto it would spin a little off the line and that was all (on the street with 245/45/17s). With the 5-speed (same tires) It has no traction in 1st, goes into 2nd sideways, and spins about the same into 3rd as it did off the line with the auto! Oh ya and that nice little bark into 4th!

It opened up so much power in the car, that I don't think it will ever see an auto (at least an AOD) ever again!

i believe that there is a time for everything so i can see both ways even though i think you should drive a stick all the time i can see when i would rather drive a auto. ie date, driving to the hospital while hurt, you have a broken leg, your drunk but in that case you shouldnt be driving it at all.

to be fair- everyone should try both before deciding, my father always claimed to hate auto without having driven one. His last two cars (90 Jaguar and 96 350 Chev Tahoe) were both auto - he won't drive anything else now!

Why does everyone say that 5 speeds are a pain in the *** in the city? Doesnt bother me. Makes the daily commute more enjoyable ÍMOA, autos are boring.

But hey, who cares what I think, It's personal preference!!

Well..GM's have better geared auto's than Ford do. But in my car I went from a best of 14.84@96.5 to a 13.82@100.18 with NO other change than going to 5spd. I didn't mind the auto..but OD went and I like 5spd. Most people don't gain that much but i can drive better then the average 5spd driver I guess. If I had a car for just the track...it would be a built C4 for sure. But I like the 5spd for a street/strip car. I like being in control more...

"so then feather your clutch smart one"

Maybe I was trying to see what the car had after the swap! When racing I obviousely try and avoid this, smart one!!!

And John Force actually has no gaers, he just uses clutch presure to get going!!! One gear, GO!

There were other factors involved there. You're not goin to drop a whole second by switching trans. Unless your 700R4 was slipping like crazy.

I don't know, I went from a 14.25 to a 13.90 with the same swap, and I would have considered myself a pretty bad driver at the time (about 1 week driving 5-speed). The AODs were the crappiest trannies to go in any muscle car, or performance car! The truth was the AODs were designed for family cars and ended up in the Mustangs. They can be made to perform, but after spending all that money, the 5-speed is much cheaper!

BAH you're not a real man if you can't handle driving stick with a broken leg... don't you know the rules?

It was nice manually shifting the auto, ut there is nothing like hammering each gear, and getting the tires to break until 3rd, and 4th with that bark of the tires! It is just too much fun!

I would like to learn manual one day. Was looking to get a manual car, but i found my car before i ever did, so its auto. No complaints though, i like that fact that there is very little chance of error when racing an auto, and thats what i want.

True if your good manual driver u make up for it, but in my opinion i think have a clutchless manual would be the best. Its that stupid clutch that i hate. U guys have to agree, clutchless manual would rock.

Dont they make those for professional racing?

You can have your transmission pro-shifted, which means they take out every other tooth on the gears so that you can shift it without using the clutch.

Heres a vote for Auto. You can always manually shift too.

I like the idea of the pro shifted 5-speeds, it has the best of both worlds, but there is something about having to really drive the car! With tires, and auto and an aftermarket rev limiter, and a shift lite, it seems the purpose of racing is lost. There is nearly no work involved, and you just sit back and race. Thats just my opnion, because I have had an auto, and it started to get old!
