Dodge Viper RT/10 vs. modded '86 IROC

OK, anyone who knows my car knows it's down for a engine. I've been driving my friends '89 IROC occasionally, and alittle over a month ago a blue and white striped Viper RT/10 ( I think it was) pulled up on me. Mind you, this car has nothing more than an L98, a slipping original tranny with 160k miles that shifts at WOT at 6500 ( whoa... )ported plenum, AFPR, airfoil, minor tuning and tweaking with cheap mods like K&N's. I beat him off the line, but he got ahead of me by around 2-3 car lengths in what was close to an 1/8 mile. Now I'm kinda suprised he wasn't to the freeway by then, but here's the scenario...
My '86 IROC, balanced 350 TPI, SLP ported runners, ported Edelbrock TPI base, SLP 1 3/4" headers, 3" cat and Borla catback, ZZ9 cam, mildly ported and polished TFS 23* aluminum heads, 1.52 roller rocker arms, MSD-6AL, all the little cheap/free mods, 30# injectors (maybe 26#)T-56 tranny with a kevlar clutch, 3.73 gears with a Torsen diff and moser axles in a 4thgen rear with ZR-1 style SS wheels, future Superram replacement. Powerplant will be a 406 by this time next year with the existing SR and 30# injectors, planning ahead to save money now. I'm trying to get an honest 420 HP out of this 350, any guesses? I figure if I could pull off that, the only thing left in town is the Diablo and the Viper GTS...there is no competition here as far as rice goes...mostly LS1 T/A's here...mildly modded

BTW: I do plan for an additional 150 'wet' system, just in case, hehehe

Unless you are running 12.6 in the 1/4 you are fu(ked. He will kill you. Save your rep, buy a 600 hp motor and give him a go!

They guy definately was not racing you, or didnt know how to drive. All you would have seen is taillights. It is amazing at how many people have hipo cars, and cant drive them.

I ran one at the track, and beat him with my 305, but the guy did not know how to drive his car, and spun his tires for half the track, allowing me to drive away from him.

well to all that think the Viper is a 1/4 mile killer is dead wrong. It's a rally killer. Race him for the 1/2-1 mile and he will kill you easily. If yo have ever seen a R/T-10 on the track know that they DO spin the tires halfway down the track because they have WAYYYYYY to much torque to keep those 20 inchers from sticking.

Heres one better, take the race at a rolling start(say 20-30) and he will leave you were 4 blocks back.

Man i know the viper is like 80 GRAND but you gotta remember to include about 20 grand in the camaros price tag for it to look like it is the king of the world (kinda like a viper) im sorry unless youve pulled up to a stoplight with one of these beasts next to you, and he revs it up and just FLOORS IT OF THE Line you would understand... they are animals.

I agree with vortec... quit being such *******..

I got my car for $12,000 CANADIAN.. if I had the extra $70K+ to spend on my Camaro, I'd be pink slip racin' almost every Viper out there, and I'd still have enough money to buy a really good car for the winter, go on a vacation, and be able to buy a nice set of slicks and rims JUST to go out racing for one weekend

My buddy has an RT/10 with the rear exit exhaust (dont remember the year), and a built fbody may give him a run. Earlier post was correct about traction problems, If you are cruising in 2nd and punch it nothing but smoke and noise. If you did the suspension mods needed to get the kind of power you are talking about to the ground effectivly you have a real chance on the street. I have driven the car and the clutch and shifter are at best described as strange. If the viper is driven by someone who doesnt know what they are doing then your chances increase a lot. If you could get 400hp (with or without nos)then maybe you would win. Im not saying the viper is slow, but I agree that the car isnt exactly set up for 1/4 mile racing. If there were any turns involved (autocross) he would smoke ya.
good luck and let us know if you get a light with this guy.
peace

I'm gonna probably get the Camaro rolling again under it's own power next year by January, when I can call it complete. Along with my listed mods, suspension mods are Lakewood LCA's and panhard rod, all new steering components, ZR-1 SS wheels, still with Eagle F1-s (P275-40ZR17's)...I may have the rear wheels widened or get some real ZR1 rear wheels so I can run a P315-40-ZR17/18. Half coil cut from front IROC springs, rear WS6 4thgen springs with 4thgen axle, new VST struts and shocks, all poly bushings, front solid 34mm swaybar, rear 24mm swaybar, Spohn subframes, and a STB.

I'm considering a street rollbar (the kind that runs along the floorboard), driveshaft safety loop, LCA relocation brackets, and a new torque arm. I considered a crossbrace but I'm kinda wondering if that's overkill.

I doubt I'll see that Viper again. I think I forgot to mention that it had Louisiana plates on it. Of course there is some guy who visits my friends neighborhood occasionally with a red GTS. And another in town red with stripes, and another blue RT/10. I see them maybe once a year...who knows...I'm most concerned about modded Mustangs which are more popular here, I figure wax a good Viper, don't even worry about the Mustangs...
