Grand Am vs Monte SS

I know its not thirdgen, but opinions would be apprecited.

Simple question. I got a 2000 Grand Am SE2, 3.4 v6. Friend has 2001 Monte SS, 3.8 v6 (i'm prety sure the SS has the 3.8) Both cars bone stock. Any outcome predictions?

My vote goes to the Monte SS, based on the capability of the vehicles in question. Ofcourse, this doesn't mean you shouldn't race your friend. Upsets are always possible.

I would say the monte. They are pretty quick. I havent seen any 1/4 times for the Grand Am, but I know the monte runs a mid 15. Give it a shot and let us know!

The SS, but you can have the satisfaction that you have a better looking car than that piece of crap new Monte.

It's quite fugly imho.

I just saw on another board that the Grand Am GT, with 5 more hp and torque than the SE, someone ran a 15.43. So I would guess the SE can do high 15, low 16?

The Grand Am GT also has better gearing than the SE, which is probably where most of the performance difference is.

It's a joke that Pontiac tags the GT as having a high output motor when it's only 5hp stronger than its SE version. To add to this, the 3400's used in the Monte's and Impalla's as base motors are rated 5hp higher than the supposed high output motor in the GA GT, and the torque is the same.

Also, the 15.43 is quick for a stock GT, which normally runs high 15's in the 1/4 mile. The SE is probably a low 16's car. But I still say race the SS, because you never know what can happen.

If you compare 0-60s, the cars are identical (7.8 seconds). I've driven 3.4 GAs/Aleros and 3.8 GPs/Intrigues...I gotta say they feel almost identical in the way they pull.

Only one way to find out right???

Ok the straight ****

Monte SS

3.8L

200hp @ 5200
225 lb.-ft @ 4000

3400lbs

Grand Am SE2

3.4L

170hp @ 4800
195 lb.-ft @ 4000

3100lbs

Grand am has better gears, I would say it is very close you got almost 300lbs on him but he has 30 in both Trq and HP, so maybe him by half a car.

Not to be argumentive, but the SS has a 3.29 final drive ratio(axle ratio), as does the Grand Am GT. Last I checked, the SE had a 3.05 ratio. The Grand Am does have smaller diameter tires, though, which helps acceleration.

I build the 2003 Monte's in Oshawa, Ontario and you will not beat a Monte SS with a Grand Am GT, I'd put money on it.

On the upcoming 2003 models we are putting a new revised supercharger on the 3.8L in the Monte SS's. Boost will be higher than the Grand Prix GTP's version, and the motor compartment (my area) is getting a lot of extra reinforcements. The Monte's also use an aluminum engine cradle to reduce weight. The 2003 Monte will run mid to low 14's.

I'd say the Monte because I raced a Monte and a Grand Am and at least the Monte stayed close behind....
