i hear that a 305 has more torque than a 350 but a 350 has more horse power. so who would win in a race up to 60 and a 1/4 mile race? yes, i know i should know this but still someone tell me.

Stock vs. Stock the 350 has more HP and torque. Therefore the 350 would win.

power has little to do with 60' performace. it has more to do with traction. i have a 305tbi, and i can kick the crap out of a lot of my friends out to the 330's. because i can dead hook and i have the right converotr and gearing for my set up.
power makes fast, gearing and grip make quick. 60ft's are all about being quick.

Stock for stock 350's for the most part have more HP and torque and for the most part leaving traction aside will win 0-60. However, I'm sure there a few 305s with the G92 option that could take some 350s.

right, 350 will have more power, BUT the 305 5-speeds were about 3 tenths FASTER then the 350 auto's

Exactly, I've tried this little scenario at a local track, mine was a 305TPI 5speed, his was 350TPI auto, both stock, both same condition overall, and I took him by just under 3 tenths. I think the stick has alot to do with it. If the 305 was auto and the 350 was stick the outcome would be opposite.
depending on driver that is...

I think your comparison could be off. What years were the cars. I have seen most 305 TPI 5 speeds of my year (91-92) hit times of around 14.5-14.9. My formula ran a 14.4 stock. Now I dont deny that they are very close but I havent seen any go faster than that.

im sure you can run it 3 tenths faster by dumping the clutch at 5000 and power shifting down the track.

From my experience on the street, its pretty even up to 60mph. This is probably because us wimpy 305 guys dont have to worry too much about traction. We can just punch it and go. The 350 punches it, spins, then goes. I think that is why it can be pretty competitive on the street.

No one should win because that would be going past the speed limit in most states and no one this board does that, right?

watch what you say, Ive beaten a formula 350 myself. I'd say...if the engine is in good tune, and the car is in good condition. So basicly when they were new, the 350 should win. After 10 years of possible abuse (The newest our cars can be), the margin can become much closer.

I agree. If I raced a TPI 305 car in my cars current condition it very well could beat me. I am having some serious tuning issues with my car and other small problems. Right now I am stuck in the upper 14's. In a few weeks I should be turning 13.9x's though.

Year for year, road test for road test, a 350 was ALWAYS faster in road tests when compared to a 305. In the fastest years ('91-'92), G92 305s 0-60 was 6.5-6.6, while 350s were 5.8-6.3. Even when the 350 debuted, it was still faster (6.9) than a 305 (7.0-7.4).

These numbers are using like-year IROCs or Z28s for comparison purposes, used in the same articles on the same tracks...

It would take a skilled driver to take a stock 350 in the the 5 second range. They are torque mongers.

OK, just one question. Maybe it is my tires(kelly chargers), but if I stomp on the gas it ignites the tires(well, ONE of them anyway). If I had a posi rearend things might be different. Why would my 305 TPI be any different than the other 305's above me in this topic?

Posi should help your traction. I'm running bridgestone RE910's (245/50/16) with a 3.27 posi rear. If I nail it from a stop my tires dont spin. I hook and go.

Well stock for stock and year for year, the 350 is usually gonna take it, especially if the 305 is a TBI, a 305 TPI would put up a little more of a fight, especially a 5 speed, but I still gotta go with the L98. The 350 has more power and torque than the 305. Also Adam your Formula is sweet as hell.
