1989 IROC vs. 2002 Vette - who will win?

My brother in law just bought a new '02 Vette. I don't understand why, but he didn't want a six speed, so he passed up the Z06 option. Weirdo! Anyway, my best 1/4 pass has been a 12.9 and that is w/stock tpi. I will soon put on the superram that is fully ported (but still w/48 mm tb). Should I stay away from racing him up top? What about when I get the superram on? How much of a handful is he gonna be?

well a stock 2002 z06 does the quarter in 12.4(what GM claims), and tops speed drag limited of 156MPH (according to Car and Driver), but i dont know what drag speed means, i think that was the cap on the automatics...

sorry i didnt help a whole lot, but thats what they claim the 1/4 is, CAD mag says they couldnt get it scoot across the line in less than 12.7...

I figure his car should hit a 13.1-13.4, and with the new superram, you should take him easily. I say race him, it would be a nice feeling to see such an exotic looking car in your back window!!!

road and track went 170 in coupe. also, car and driver went 13.0 in a convertable. but I think those times are corrected. if you can pull a 12.9 you will win. after that??????????

The Rock will be victorious.

It takes a very skilled driver to pilot even a Z06 into the 12s. I have seen Z06 cars run all night (5 passes) and not break into the 12s. If you know your car and it can run 12s you will win. Have faith and confidence.

Shouldn't be a problem, I've taken new vettes all day & night.. it's only the GTS-R ACR vipers that scare me. d*mn those scca resctricted cars. so fast

my personal opinion is if I stay down low with him 0-70 or so (w/out the SR), I will have him - I think the key is the take off. I know how to launch my car now, and he has just gotten his - he knows how to race, but has never had anything quite that fast before. I think if I don't let the tires spin, but give enough to the wheels that it's on the point to just about spin, I'll have no problem with him. I guess we'll just have to see! I don't know when, but I will let you know.

A friend and I took his mother's new at the time 98' Vette convert to the track. It's: A4, 3.15 performance ratio, etc. It ran mid 13's all night at 103-104 MPH.

If you can pop a 12.90 pass, I wouldn't sweat it. Just don't get "treed" at the starting line. As for top speed....if you haven't won by 80 MPH on a public road, lift and live to race another day.

i dunno this guy, but i do know from experience that at least half (being generous) of the people who buy vettes really can't drive... they buy them cuz they want a VETTE... and becuz they are too lazy to build something to outrun it...
now there is you... you've spent a lot of quality time with your car... you know your car... you've driven your car for probably years... that alone gives you a huge advantage... now, taking into account his inexperience with the car, and your experience.. plus the mods and your prior times... i'd put major money on you (if you can keep your cool)
run him and let us know

Man, let me tell you what a rush it is to beat any yuppie in a car that cost 5-10 times more than yours did. There was a guy down at the track in a grey viper talking smack about how fast it was...he was running 12.3-12.5 at around 118, I pulled up in my IROC and laid down back to back 12.0's at 120+. It had to make him think twice about spending 80k on a car and get beat by me in an 8k IROC. Good luck man, I would love to see you tear him a new *** !

Oh man...I just got through talkin w/my bro in law for the first time since he got his vette. He LOVES to race...so of course "Hey, when we gonna race?" I told him whenever he is up to it....and he wants a month to break it in first. I asked him what he thinks it runs and he says the magazines say he thinks...mid 12's...how much hp? 350....at the wheels?...350 lol He said and "NO 0-60 BS...thats not a race!" I said thats fine, but I won't go past like 80 on the street. He asked if I was that confident I'd beat him and I said no, not 100% sure at all...there is no shame in getting beat by a vette. He said he thinks he'll outrun me in the end and I told him I don't think he'll be able to catch up! IT'S ON! Bets may be taken at this time lol.

If you run 12.9, Im gonna say you'll take him. The Vette is an automatic right? Unless he gets one hell of a launch and manually shifts the hell out of it, I think you should edge him out, though it would be extremely close. Now, if he had a standard and he was a good driver, I think he would take you, but not by too much.
