Can I beat these cars?
I just got done building my 1991 Camaro RS up. It's a built TBI 350 with:
Ported Vortec Heads
LT4 Hot Cam
Air Gap Intake
Comp 1.5 Full Roller Rockers
Elgin Roller Lifters
Lt4 Valve Springs
Shorty Headers and Y Pipe going to 3inch Exhaust, No Cat
MSD Plug Wires, JEGS Distributor, Summit Hot Coil
454 Throttle Body
Soon to be a 3.08 posi, BTW it's a 5 spd
I'm a senior in high school, and like to race with the classmates
Here's my competion:
Late 90s Honda Prelude.... Stereotypical decked out rice burner.. No turbo though
2006 Grand Prix GT.. Stock
2008 Pontiac GXP.. Exhaust Done
2008 Infiniti G37S... Stock
2005 V6 Mustang.. Stock
2006 Pontiac G6... Stock
And finally.. An 89 pontiac firebird.. I think it's an LB9 car
Think I can take them? Which ones would I have problems with? The Infiniti kind of worries me...

Yea id say the infinity would be the only one to give you trouble. Your engine should be pretty strong . Good luck knocking off those imports.

I have a similar combo.
SBC 350
AFR 180cc heads
LT4 Hot Cam with 1.6 roller rockers
Weiand Speed Warrior intake (Basically a Performer RPM clone)
SBC TBI bored to 2.00 inches
T5 transmission
3.73 Auburn type posi rear
I went 13.7 @ 105MPH with a 2.3 60 foot on street rubber. I don't think any of those cars could keep up.

No substitute for the sound of a well tuned V8. My car isnt fast by any means but damn it sounds and runs good. My wifes v6 altima is fairly fast in comparison to a stock third gen but id much rather ride in my firebird. And we must not forget these cars are 20+ yrs old and fast for thir time especially against the import cars of their time

Re: Can I beat these cars?
No.. Me and my dad got in argument about that. He says it wouldn't be worth the time or gas to switch to 3.73s. He says I would barely feel the difference. Only in drag racing would it make a huge impact impact. I drive this car a lot. So it wouldn't hurt to keep in the 3.08s.

but,
That's kind of the point though, with the 5-speed you can run gears like 3.73's and it still be streetable.

Yeah, and I'll be going to college next year. This and my truck are my daily drivers. So with 3.08s and TBI, maybe I can get 17-18 mpgs. And still with 350-380 hp.

Dang nice looking car too man! I had a 91z28 i hated the ugly wing they came with. How is that TBI working for ya? Im leaning toward carb when i build my 350 but i am liking the TBI as far as gas mileage and reliability is concerned. I may be swayed into just upgrading it as you have. Wish my car had the 5spd i bet its a blast to drive! You should hurt some feelings with that car good luck

Well you got 5 gears so you would be ok and it would give you a few tenths. But best to go with your mechanics advice

Re: Can I beat these cars?
the prelude shouldn't be any issue. my buddy had a 91 prelude SI with typical tuner mods and i could beat him with my LO3. I run 15.1's just to give you a reference.
With your set up you should beat all of that but i think the infiniti and the GXP may give you a run. Hard to say how much time those 3.08s will cost you. You and your dad should have compromised on 3.42's. I get about 27mpg and run about 1550 rpm at 60mph. As mentioned, you can google the 1/4 mile times of all those cars.
You would have liked my high school class.

Re: Can I beat these cars?
Not sure how easy it would be to find one these days, but my high power L03 car had a 9-bolt with 3.45 gear from a G92 5spd LB9 car. It is ALOT stronger than a 7.5" 10-bolt and worked perfectly with my 4L60E setup. The car I had was 2.73 open, but I never drove it with the 2.73 open EXCEPT off the trailer into the shop to remove the rod knocking L03.

Re: Can I beat these cars?
I have not seen them quite that quick here in normal air. Most run about 13.8-13.9 @ 100-101 mph. Might be able to go a little quicker with a stick and a good driver. Uprev adds 20-30 wheel hp to a 3.7 though so look out for tuned, "stock" cars. The tuning makes a huge difference.

Re: Can I beat these cars?
Im sure the ones i saw were probably "tuned" wit basics, exhaust etc.. like most cars are at the dragstrip. I watched em turn 13.50s all day round 106ish. Ive never saw a stock L98 myself turn under a 14.4. Ive saw 5spd LB9s do 14.60. I have saw a G6 do 14.2 and ofcourse all this depends on air temp down south. We typically lose atleast 3 tenths in these humid summer months.

I would have 2 see that with my own eyes. I do not believe for one second no 305 turned in the 13s stock ofcourse. I have to call BS on that! I do agree on the Lt1s and Ls's. If u saw an LB9 turn 13.9 it was in no form or fashion STOCK.

Re: Can I beat these cars?
Well...3.73 would sure help it. Take it to the track and let us know. I do think the 373s would be good for up to 3 tenths on that car. I still think it will pull in the lower 13s with 308 gears. I had a 350 wit stock vortec heads. flat tappet cam 218 218 w/465 lift, 327? gears in an auto with stock torque converter in a 87GTA and smoking the street tires it still turned 13.7 if id had some grip it would have been low 13s. So yea you should definitely.

I have since tuned that 305 and it put down 230 RWHP and 310 RWTQ with only chip tuning and 1.6:1 full roller rockers.

Re: Can I beat these cars?
If it is tuned right you have a 375-400 HP engine. That is 315-340 RWHP or slighly more than a 2001-2002 LS6 intake equipped LS1 6spd 4th gen dyno's STOCK. Those cars could run 12.90s with relative ease in good weather. Your car is lighter and makes more torque. I would think you could hit the 12s as well if the tuning on your car is good and you get some practice launching and rowing the gears.

Re: Can I beat these cars?
That GXP is supercharged from the factory 0-60 around 5.5 seconds, and 1/4 around low 15.
You said he did an exhaust, what about intake.. sure he didn't adjust the pulleys on that supercharger?
That and the infinity are the only ones I would be worried about.. but if they are all automatic, you can make up having the modified 5spd
EDIT: Sorry, think I mixed the GXP up with the GTP

Hate to say it but that Infiniti may have your number. Those cars are quick and have no traction issues on the street. If you get him out the hole you may have a chance but those cars pull pretty hard on top end.
Re: Can I beat these cars?
Here's the thing about tuning. I have the 454 throttle body, but the injectors on it made it run rich. I put 350 injectors on it, it idles and runs great. But, I can tell around 4500rpm ( tach reads high) that the motor needs more fuel. Do I need to chip the car with the 454 injectors? Or should I buy some caprice cop injectors and meet in the middle? What should i do?
