Re: sbc bored 40 over

500 HP is doable but not easy nor cheap.

You need compression 10:1 bare min, 11:1 better.

You need great heads. 200cc intake port min, 210-220cc better for a 400 sbc

Something like Brodix wild things, AFR, Profiler, etc.

You will need closer to .550" to .600" lift cam... Roller cam would be the best way of going. Something in the 240-250* @ .050" range

7/16" rocker studs
Full roller rockers. Billet alum or stainless steel

750 cfm double pumper, min. 850 cfm would be better for a 400

Single plane intake like the victor jr. min.

Good oiling system, 7qt pan, windage screen, rear main baffle, etc.

1-3/4" tube headers

Aluminum heads like Brodix, AFR or profiler

Pistons... Maybe... Speed pro flat top 4vr does not tell me enough about them. Are they cast, hyper or forged? With a 500 hp build you really want forged

What cc are they? The piston CC, bore, stroke, deck height, head gaskets, and head camber CC sets your compression ratio.

How deep is the valve pockets?

With a bigger cam like needed to get into the 500 HP range, you MAY have valve to piston clearance issues and may have to fly cut the valve pockets deeper in the pistons or replace pistons.
