car runs 13.2 @ 107mph on 255,60,15 BFG T/A radials tires and bad traction issues.

just bought 2 Mickey Thompson Street ET rear tires

will i break the diff....
up till now i keep out of the water box at the strip and try not to smoke the tires in stage area

worried about braking centre in diff or axles.

engine is about 400 hp with simmilar torque.

Re: 1982 diff and M/T slickd

Some things I have done to help my relatively stock rear last:

1) no wheel hop!!
2) burn out just in front of the water (after wetting tires) and drive out of the burnout and to the line. No dry hop!
3) load the rear at the line by creeping into the second yellow with your foot on the brake. You want the pinion teeth in contact with the ring gear.
4) did I mention...NO WHEEL HOP!! If it starts to bounce, get out of it immediately.

I have over 300 passes on my 1990 rear (a little stronger than yours). All of them in the 400RWHP range.

The fact is that if you hook up with any kind of power you are going to break that diff. Time to update. If your trying to drag race why worry about that every time you are leaving the line not to mention the thought of hitting the wall or someone else in the lane next to you.

I would invest in a stronger rearend setup over the winter. That way your safe!

Re: 1982 diff and M/T slickd

there are hundreds of these cars on this site running 12,s with these difs....if and when i get $3000 for a 9 inch and pay $1400 to ship it here and pay taxes i will do it tomorrow
... i have had 37 runs and no problem but with slicks and more rpm launches there will be the chance of walking home...thanks anyway

Based on you trap speed you should be ok on the 10 bolt. Automatics seem to get away with launching on 10 bolts vs manual cars.

What's your current 60 ft time?

Right running 10 bolts, more than likely not doing dig races with slicks. It'll break, plan on getting something better

Maybe I have been lucky...but I wouldn't call this a time bomb. I was scared of the rear when I first bought the car. A good friend of mine was running a 7.5 in his 1980 Malibu drag car that routinely ran low 10's. He was the one that encouraged me not to give up too soon on the 7.5. So far, I have been happy. Will it break? Sure. I also broke the G Force 9 inch in my 2010 Camaro on street tires. Wheel hop and incorrect gear setups can wreak havoc!

Everyone always goes for the HP before being able to put it to the ground. I understand it is the funner thing to spend money on but with what you have it sounds like if you spent some time back there it would be a lot quicker then 13's

I'm not trying to offend, I just know how it goes with those rearends. I had street tires and ran 12's for years with the old ten bolt. First pass on the slicks boom and that was it. All it took was for the car to hook and actually want to go. So I am speaking from experience. This was with all the goodies too, girdle, bracing, Richmond gears, moser axles, spool the works.
