My 84 TA versus 95 Z28

Okay, I know it isnt a contest stock. My LG4 versus his LT1 means I will lose by a lot. But, that 305 is coming out of my car. I have an older 350 4 bolt main running between 9.5-10.5:1 compression (350/300 gross horse motor). The heads are good, and it has a mild cam. With headers, full exhaust system (one cat), modified stock carb to 700 cfm per tech modification, high rise intake manifold (unsure on which one yet, any recommendations?), 3.23 posi, shift kit in a 700R4, and cowl induction on open element air intake I plan on placing this in my 84 TA. 305 is there to pass emissions and inspection. This versus my friends 95 Z28 with a cold air intake and exhaust, but no headers. He has a 6 speed and 3.23 posi. What do you guys think? He claims he runs 13.7@102, but methinks he was correcting for altitude, as he is a known liar. This kid has done nothing but make fun of my 84 Camaro with the 2.8 and brag about his Z. He needs to be taken down. Do you guys think its possible? How about if I got 3.73's? Or a really nasty street cam? I'm seriously looking into both modifications, namely the cam. I figure I have weight on him, but I dont know about his tranny over my auto. Power is a tossup. I figure I have more power if everything runs at top condition, but that is rarely the case.

If he has stock gearing in that '95 Z28 he's got 3.42's in back and not 3.23's. The only year that the 6 speed Z28's got 3.23's was in '93 and it was an upgrade over that of 2.73 rear end. That only occuried in '93 and the '94 and up F-bodies with 6 speeds all got 3.42's.

Launching a 6 speed car with those 3.42's can be tricky on street tires. It's easy to take off spinning and that's not good, I would usually lose a few tenths off my 1/4 time by spinning off of the line. (I have a '96 T/A M6) There's also bogging that comes into play when launching and that can take away from the launch which is very important part in racing as you probably already know. If the person isn't a good shifter than that comes into play also.

On the 13.7, it sounds possible with his mods and the 102 MPH sounds possible also. It depends on which track he runs at etc... I have a friend that has a '95 Z28 and with a cutout and cold air kit and he ran 13.6 or 13.7 and his car has the auto in it with 2.73's out back. That shows that the power is there to do it, but with the 6 speed driver skill is going to come into play big time. That same car at a different track though ran like a 14.1 or 14.2 so like I said above, it depends on where that guy raced his car at, what the temps were like outside etc...

On the mods your looking at doing, 3.73's would probably help some and the cam would be a cool addtion. Ever thought of a torque converter upgrade? If you got an aggresive cam and also a good aftermarker (like a Yank for example) torque converter that had the stall speed a little higher that could help you a lot. Not only would the extra stall speed help rev the motor up more to get you in a better RPM range to make more power, but the extra RPM's would help you get more use of the aggresive cam.

If you added 3.73's into the mix that could make for some interesting driving around. The extra torque the higher stall conveter could give you with 3.73's and that sounds like you'll maybe need drag radials then to hook up the power. I'm speaking more so from a 4th Gen. (mostly LS1 powered) standpoint here but I'm assuming the same types of things may come into play for your car also.

I hope this info helps, if you have any questions feel free to ask. I'll try my best to answer them. Not the expert here but just trying to offer some tips on what 'may' make you faster.
