78 vette

i was an lunch and decided to cruise around and to my liking i stumbled upon a beauty of a red 78 or so vette. Hes going about 80 for a while and i catch him and we hit a stop light. Now i love to race even if i know ill lose so i rev a little and give him looks but he wouldnt go so he accelerates like my grandma to about 80 and i pass him, nothing, and another stop light, nothing. Now i know i have an lg4 and im slow but it looks fast and that should be enough for a "vette". Dumb cars anyway, i like to occasionally have more than one friend and a small bag of groceries in my car, not to mention payable insurance. sorry i had to vent, anyone else run into fast cars that should race but dont?

Little bit of info that might make you feel better...

A 76 vette 350 put out 185 hp and an 84 had about 220, I believe. Get what I'm saying? If he knows anything about cars- and his is stock- you may have walked all over him.

you would have gotten beat , he probably has better gear than you , im assuming you have a 2.73 rear ? and his tq numbers are higher than yours . plus 155 hp in a 3800 lb car isnt a great combo

corvettes are heavier than your camaro...ever seen the frame of a vette...very big...a friend of mine has a 78 vette...not fast of the line really but if you sit and spin the vette would eat you alive because you can floor the vette and it wont even chirp them just squates and goes.

I have all kinds of problems in my maverick getting ppl to race me
those damn metros ( I amstill looking for revenge) will never take the bait.. though I still laugh at the fact that I lost to a metro in my celica but beat a honda
nor will those kia's, suzuki swifts or any of those other sub 1.6L cars

I know I would prolly lose but hey it's all in the fun of racing a faster car and thinking I just might beat that kia sophia

Yeah I hate people that I think will race and then won't. I was sitting at a light last night just minding my own business when a black civic rolled up next to me. Naturally I look over, and theres a dude about my age (18) with a chick. I notice the car has stock hubcaps but looks lowered and has a huge spoiled and whats looks to be a chrome tip. When the other light went red and we were about to get the green he lets off the brake and starts going so I launch hard on the green at about 2500 and what does he do? Takes off real easy and then makes a left turn about 200 feet up into a trailer park. I just shifted into 5th and laughed.

no , your camaro is right around there . my z28 weighs in at 3750 , thats without a/c , air , and rear seats , your car will run somewhere around the same figure

Theres no way a corvette weighs 3800 lbs, and a camaro being lighter? I dont think so. Corvettes are made out of fiberglass, camaros are made of metal. Corvettes have no back seat, and are shorter cars. Also, much of their suspention is made of aluminum. Corvettes in 78' could be ordered with 220 hp engines (L82), and with the 4 speed they ran high 14s. I have an 84 LG4 Z28, and it is a turd when it comes to racing. High 16s stock, maybe. I have to run and hide from Hondas. Now im not saying the LG4 cant make power. You just have to spend some cash and mod them. This summer i going to do some major upgrades to get it into the 14s, but in stock form, it is just plain slow. To put it shortly, he would have killed you.

One of my pals in high school had a 79 silver vette it was an automatic. At homecoming we raced against my 92 3.1 firebird automatic at the time I had around 25,000 miles on it. I kicked the vettes ***!! People thought my car was the smack and so did I. At the time myself nor my friends didn't really know how slow those vettes really were. I thought I was pretty cool at the time, but then I also found out how slow those vettes really are. The next week my other buddy used his dads 84 vette 4-spd and handed my *** to me.

That car must have had the base engine (L48 - 180 hp). They were certainly slow, but i didnt think they were slow enough to be beaten by a V6. As a comparison, the 84 Vettes werent much faster. They only came with the L83 Crossfire 350 (205 hp), and ran high-mid 15s in the quarter at best. Maybe the C4 you raced was an 85? That year introduced TPI and ran low 14s stock.

If that's so, it ways more than my Crown Victoria. But you know more about vettes than I do.
