I just recently got my car and haven't been able to test it against any 5.0 stangs yet. My Malibu has no problem dealing with them, but what about my 87 Formula 350? I would think it would be a fairly even race. Right now I have a L98 with a stage 1 chip, 3 inch cat back, high flow cat, CAI, 3.27 gears and some shedded weight (no carpet insulation, smog system, spare, jack, power windows, locks, hatch, rear defrost, pwr mirrors etc etc)
I don't know what kind of numbers 5.0's put up or how they vary year to year, but should I be able to take them as I stand right now? I'm talking about lightly modified 5.0's.

I think you would edge out a completely stock 5.0 mustang. But like you said it also depends on what year and mods the stang has. Probabaly better for the Stang guys to give some info on the 5.0s

The years for L98's to watch for is 87 and 88, and the 5.0 5-Speed combination. They are very close with L98's and should be good races. I think They make like 220HP and 300TQ stock. I know a Camaro makes 225HP and 330TQ in 87 and 230HP and 330TQ in 88, the Firebird will probably be slightly less (around 5-10 off of each figure) because of the intake and stuff. You've got a nice 3.27 gear ratio and exhaust work so I'd say you'd do good against a similarly modded M*****g and would most likely beat a stock 1.

Thanks for the info guys. I know the damn restrictive intake on my car was seriously hurting me. I just recently installed a homemade CAI w/K&N and there was a huge difference. The 87 stock set up is terrible. I figure between the CAI and high flow cat I should be right around the 230hp/340tq range or close to that. I cannot wait to slap a nice set of AFR's and a healthy cam in this thing. Hopefully, it won't be long.

From '87 to '92 the Mustangs were rated at 225 hp and 300 tq. In '93 they had a rating of 205 hp and, I think, 285 tq. The truth is the 93s aren't any slower and shouldn't have been underrated. The ones to watch out for in stoc kform are the '87 and '88, because they used a speed density system which seemed to make them a little faster, but react worse to mods. I say with your car you should beat most stock mustangs, and have agood race with an '87 or '88 5-speed LX coupe that is stock. Then its all a guessing game with bolt on cars.

I'm lightly modded. All I have is exhaust, gears and a set of pullies. My times are in my sig and I am automatic. I'd prob be running around 13.9-14.2 if i could get some traction off the line but oh well. A 5-spd car with a good driver would solidly be in the 13s. I'll let you know when I swap my car over to 5-spd

Thats funny Mustang5L5 we ran the exact same time a 14.2@98. Thats when I just had SLP headers, catback, and runners. Guess the L98s are pretty similiar to the 5.0s.

I apreciate all the honest responses to this post. I figured the cars are pretty even overall in terms of performance. Once again, thanksafor the info, especially you stang guys
