Sho?
Ok, I am taking a lot of **** from a friend who has a 94 Tarus SHO with an auto. The only thing he has done to it is added a K&N filter. Took him almost an hour to get that on. I know, I was there.
Anyway. I'm going to be dropping in an LT1 cam, intake manifold, some heads, some suspension mods, 3" exhaust, and the Ultimate TBI mods.
With all this stuff, will I have a chance at getting anywhere close to beating him?
Turns out he paid $10k for the car.
So I told him that for $10k I could probably come close to drag racing. I know it would be a little more than that, but for the $10k I could buy car/mods and have a pretty fast F-Body.
Anyway, I just want to put the Ford back where it belongs.

The autos werent really that quick. The 5-speeds were reasonably quick with their strong top end. I think the auto SHOs were in the 15.5 range. With those projected mods, you should be able to take him.

Ok, that sounds pretty good. But I still have a one wheel wonder 2.73 rearend.
That's going to keep me back from getting places. I just have to really watch how much gas I give it on staring. But, other than that, I should have a pretty good chance at taking him.
Well, I've rode in his car. It felt pretty slow off the line. I read somewhere else that onse they shift into third, they begin to pull hard. I can vouch for that one.
But I wasn't looking at his mph at any time, so it could have just felt like alot.
Thanks for the help.

Those SHO's do kind of suck in auto form. The manuals were okay because they had good gearing to keep the yamaha motor in the higher revs. I wouldnt worry too much about him if I were you. Here is what I would do if I were you.
1. headers/exhaust
2. Gears - I would go with 3.42's at least
3. Cam- the LT1 cam would be perfect and cheap!
4. Torque converter - if its an auto this can take as much as .4 off your 1/4 mile time
You can stop here and SMOKE the SHO...or keep going and get more competitive. From there the next thing I would change would be your heads. Pick up a set of L69/LB9 heads and port them and have a 3 angle job done. Slap those on and you'll really be cookin! Im not sure about the computer/tbi mods that would support these mods...but check with the tbi board, they know their sh*t. After all is said and done I would predict that this combo could run a solid mid 14 second quarter mile at least.

I'm leaning towards some World Products S/R Torquer heads. But it's not set it stone. That's what I'm going to get if I can't find any other heads that are better for a 305. But, how will I do with a 2.73 non-posi/limited slip rear?
Oh, well. I think the heads/intake manifold should boost me up enough to compensate for the rear though. I would at least like posi or limited slip 2.73 to keep the better mileage. I have to do some highway driving with this daily driver. So I need to retain some sort of mileage.

I wouldnt worry too much about gas mileage. My daily driver has 3.27's and I get around 18mpg. I would like to swap to 3.42's but Im getting a new car instead of messing with this one. You could get a whole 3.23 10 bolt posi axle pretty cheap and swap it as a compromise. If you kept the 2.73's they would KILL your performance, and you wouldnt be able to launch well without posi.
The world heads are great! I just suggested L69/LB9 heads to keep the cost down, but the world's would be a better choice. They do like a little bowl work, and it would pay to have this done BEFORE you bolt them on the first time.
Good luck

I've seen a couple of SHOs at the track. One ran a 14.8, against my dad, and he had a few bolt ons, and the other one went 15.0 with about the same mods, only he was auto. I think with your mods you will take him, but if he does more to his car, it could be a race.

i know some guy with a sho. he says its pretty fast for a V6. hes got a racing clutch and thats it. he says he can get up to 110 easily, and his car has 150k on it i think. and i think the gearing for those cars is made to start pulling hard at 3rd gear. so if your car is just slightly modded i think u can take him, just as long as you get a good launch.

Only the 96 to whenever they stopped making them had the V8. I think that the V6 was actually faster, esp if it had the stick.

Well, I don't know if he knows how to drive or not. He seemed pretty excited when he realized that if he pushes down on the gas when it's about to shift, he can hold the gear longer.....so, if that tells you anything.
I'm pretty sure that if I do a little engine modificating, exhaust, and a little suspension, I should be able to hang with him off the line at least. I don't know about anything when he gets up to third or anything.

When the first SHO's came out they only came in stick. THen I think in like 93 or 94 they started making autos. THen they put in the V8 and thats only in auto. The V8's were actually slower than the V6 manuals. They just had more torque.

Well I know probably more SHO owners than all of you and except for the guys that actually owned an SHO, I've been in more of them that probably all of you. I've been in person watching a supercharged SHO turn 310hp at the wheels on a dyno and I've been to many a drag races with their clubs. My one friend has only a K&N and no other mods in his 91 MTX and it was ran a 14.8, not corrected. His 4th run he broke a half shaft on the passengers side and we had to use my AAA card to get him home (89miles away). These cars can move but I wouldn't worry about any auto. The auto's are dogs! The problem with those cars is the weight. A maxima with a few bolt on mods (y-pipe) can run similar times with 30 less advertised hp, go figure.
Anyways, expect to ruin the auto but make SURE you get a jump on any of the MTX versions.
oh yeah, and don't worry about the turbo and supercharged sho's, the rarely race because if they did they would probably break a half-shaft
