87 camaro vs 98 civic

i know this is pathetic, but humor me. my gf has a completely stock 98 civic with a 1.6l 4 banger, 12 inch tall ***** wing, and autozone hubcaps . im driving my ragged out 87 camaro w/2.8, auto. 134,000 miles. only thing ive done is hack the bottoms of the airboxes, gutted the cat, put an accel coil in, and beat on it for 20,000 miles:nono: . who do you think would win if i ever convinced her to race?

Sorry man, I think she'll get you too. I just don't have a lot of confidence in those early 6 cyl. Camaros.

Honda has you if she knows how to operate a car... don't see it losing any way. As for the Trans Am, you should rebuild that tranny with some better parts while you're at it... unless you're looking to drop in a T56 or the such when the T5 dies... I'd imagine you're going to overshoot the T5's maximum recommendation of 320 lb-ft of torque.

I'd race her though... might get some tail for losing LOL

she will prob hand you your butt on a platter and nothing is worse then losing to your girl, I have a 2.8 and I dont try and race VTECS or even new buicks becuase I cant win I mean my moms 2001 buick century would kill me but with the mods I have I can beat a old 4.3 2.8 3.1 you name it but the newer stuff I stay away from. If you where smart you would put a new cap and rotor in along with plugs and wires I could feel a difference with that then do everything I did in my sig and it will move pretty good, but even though its a 1.6 you might loose, I would "barrow" her car and go somewhere deserted and see what it will do.
Later
David
P.S. Your project car would litteraly stomp a mud hole in her car LOL. Nothing is worse then losing to your gf who has a smaller engine

My fiance has a 98 sh*tvic lx, which I'm guessing is the same motor your girl's has. I've driven that hunk of junk, and as stated, they only have any go in the top end, way top end, like 5-6k rpm. And how many girls are gonna do that to the car they begged daddy to get her?

I think those crappers have like 115hp? Here's a comparison. My 2000 Grand AM is rated 170hp. Now in the same distance that I've gotten my GA up to 75mph, her crap box only could get up to 55mph. I wont be driving the Camaro til spring, but I'll have to see how it compares.

Just glanced at Honda's site. Ugh. Anyway the new civic lx is rated 115hp@6100rpm, 110ft/lb torque@4500rpm. Final drive ratio 4.11 for manual, 4.07 for auto.

Now isn't the 2.8 135hp and more torque than those crappers?

Race her, kick her tail and get some tail

my friend has a stock '95 accord 4cyl 5-spd. it is a decent ride w/ a very strong little engine. I've driven it and I would say that any newer honda would prettymuch ruin your car. I'd race her just for fun, maybee she can't drive. gut your cat,cap & rotor, delco plugs, advance the timing,K & N filter.change the oil w/marvel mystery oil. drop some chemtool in the fuel tank, adjust the TV cable if it's auto,it won't work miracals, but getting your car in tune will get the most out of it. as fast as the honda is,it's real touchy with the shift points, you can't get that car to move unless it's kept precisly in the power band. maybee she'll try that "double-clutching" that vin diesel mentions on F&F and lose miserably!!

First off this is a 98 we're talking about and I believe the 1.6L came with 106Hp/103TQ... yeah that's less than 135Hp but the camaro weighs something like 3200 lbs and the civic sedan is about 2400 lbs... all that matters is power vs weight.

135/3200 = .042 Hp/lb
106/2400 = .044 Hp/lb

Well, I guess that was closer than I expected... the weights might be wrong, but the civic should still edge out the Camaro.

It gives you hope however if she would never take it up to 5-6k RPM... The hondas I had in the past had nothing unless you got into the powerband from 4500-6500... The newer ones are geared better which takes it down to about 4000-6500, but what can you expect from half of a V8?

I'm glad Phatcat brought up the wieght issue,my eyeballs almost popped out of my head when I registered my '89 corolla and I looked on the title and noticed that it's gross wieght is 2100 Lbs!! now i would never try to mod my put-put car because it looks like a cat could chew through the half shafts,so the factory torque is good enough for me. it would make a great sleeper if I bothered to put a mitsubishi 3.0 VR-4 V6 motor and drivetrain in it!

wtf? is double clutching??...............................exactly!

Double clutch explained (I hope)

When you have no syncros, you have to mach the revs of the two haves of the trans (input and output). You can do this on syncroed cars as well, it reduces wear on them, but really its not worth it these days, except maybe on big rigs.

To be more specific, you push in the clutch, pull the stick into neutral, drop the clutch to get it matching engine RPM's, rev to where the RPM's will be when you shift to the new gear, then push in the clutch and pop the tranny into the new gear then release the clutch. With any car made in the last 20 years it is pretty much useless. The only time you would use it is in Auto-X where you might want to go from 4th to 2nd going into a turn... so TF & TF was completely wrong using the term as a drag racing term and they had no business putting it in there in the first place because of the level of technology today's cars have in trannies.

Kinda complicated to describe...
