cassette player quit
I've got a factory cassette/eq player with a dead cassette. STick a tape in and nothing much happens -- it just ejects itself.
Does anyone have an idea of where to get this thing fixed (in the KW area) ? I tried some local stereo shops but they would not touch it... wanted to sell me the latest CD system instead blah, blah, blah...
thx,
RP.

Your best bet is to find an electronic's repair place near you, someplace that is an authourized repair center for other audio component's(alpine, sony, kenwood ..etc) keep in mind however it's not likely to be cheap, usually a flat rate just to look at it(regardless of whether they can fix it) .You could also just buy another factory unit off of somebody (wrecker etc) they aren't worth much more then $15 or $20.(hardly worth fixing at that price).
Just one other suggestion did you try a different cassette? I was having the same problem (I think the tape had rewound to tight)
it would just auto-reverse auto-reverse,eject. The next tape I used worked ok.............SR

auto reverse stuck ?
It is bouncing back and forth in auto reverse but I tried a number of tapes and they all did the same.
I'll keep looking for a shop. Somone suggested MASS Electronics in Cambridge but I prefer someone closer.
thx,

Someone here in my town can fix it probably... He works out of his house, and he knows electronics in and out.... and I know he has repaired Delco decks before... what he may do is get a spare tape mechanism and replace it

sounds good Nathan
I just want to keep it original so I am looking to fix rather than replace (there sure are alot of great replacements out there too).

i understand palric... what this guy will do is take the cassette player assembly out, and replace with it with a working.. you will still have the same stereo, just a different cassette mechanism.

Why don't you replace it with another factory unit? There is a yard here that has a stack of them. I don't think there is a VIN on the deck... it shouldn't cost you too many points at shows...

I'm pretty sure there is a yard here in London that has a few. They remove all the decks from the cars when they are processed. They have a STACK of thirdgen decks. I will check next time I'm there.

GM has a trade in program where you trade in your old broken decks as a core and then pay for a re-man. It's the same program they run with the gauge clusters.

JohnyIROC -- thx for looking I appreciate it. Best case scenario I find a CD/cassette/EQ factory unit for a '90-'92 Firebird. They are pretty rare but I sure would like one anyhow.
AcceldZ -- I never heard of a re-man program before, does this apply to all GM dealers ?
thx,
RP
