Need your help on 89 T/A

I think I may have found the car I'm going to buy. It's an 89 Trans Am, 5 Speed, 182,000km, t-tops, good body. It needs a rim and rubber, and also the front seats reupholstered. Needs a paint job, and needs to be cert/e-test. too. For $1900.00 Only problem is that I dunno what engine, and if there is anything else wrong with it. I am also 18 years old and not really up to the challenge with calling Ottawa from Toronto, unless it's for me to set up a date to pick go pick it up. I was wondering if any of you see this as a bad car to get or anything. Also if any of u are living in the Ottawa (613) area, could u possibly make a call to the dealership at (613)822-1732 (Doug Munro)

Thanx a lot guys.

don't be in a hurry

You can be absolutely certain the car will need A TON of stuff besides that which is mentioned in the ad. The seller is just noting the obvious stuff.

A $1900 f-body is likely to be a basket case and everywhere you turn it will black hole your time. Now if you don't mind this -- some guys revel in this kinda stuff -- then just be sure it is substantially the kind of car you want to end up with by the time you are done. Does Camaro_Joe really want a T/A ? Is it the colour you want, engine and driveline, brakes, options (RPOs), etc, etc.

Last time I went f-body shopping I said NO to basket cases and YES to garage queens (I bought mine with 60k on it) and although I paid ALOT more than most guys pay for f-bodies I have a sound vehicle that is more or less showroom condition.

Figure out what trade-offs matter to you and shop the auto ads.

good luck,
RP.

Thanks for the Advice

Thanks a lot palric. I can completely see what you mean. I'm Camaro_Joe, not T/A Joe.
Well here is what I want in a Camaro:
-1982 to 1990
-5.7L (350) TPI or TBI
-Auto (TH-350 or 700R4)
-3.23 rear end minimum with posi
-T-tops
-GFX
-Respectable Mileage
-Certified, or Easyily Certfied
-Something around $4000. Give or take.

Some things that are open to debate are:
-5.7L 350 could be a 5.0L 305 TPI or TBI
-Auto Tranny could be a T5 or T56

I'd really like to get this car by June so I can have it to drive for the summer. If you can help me that would be great. I'm looking in the Toronto Area. I live in Markham.
Thanks.

a white T/a

Just down the road there is a white '87 T/A that has been for sale for awhile. A hardtop with 5-speed and 4 wheel disk brakes. I think it is a TBI, possibly carb'd ?

Most important it is very clean (great paint) and has about 170ks on it. I think the guy was asking $5500 ? Want me to check into it for you ?

Thanks but $5500 is kinda steep for my budget right now. I could possibly talk the seller into $5000 or so, but It's still a lot of money for something thats not really close to what I really want.
Thanks again :hail: palric :lala:

It'll be hard to find a nice F-Body for a cheap budget.... If you could squeeze more money out for the initial price of the car.. you'll have a lot less headaches. but, if you have the know how to repair cars yourself, and you enjoy it, the only thing I advise you is, that you find a SOLID car... some rust bubbles, not big deal.. I am talking door skins, frame rails, rocker panels, floor pans, and GAS TANK... you don't want to change that gas tank... I have to ( and mine ain't even rusted...

I'll keep my eyes peeled... but I am all the way in southern ontario...

well since i've never seen a Triad, could any of you guys keep an eye in there for me. I'm going to pick up a buy and sell this week. I might be able to squeeze $5000 but thats really pushing it. Because after all I am 18 and a male so I am looking at $3400-$3600/year for insurance.
