Why does my 1le keep smokin other iroc's?
hey guys.......not to long ago i purchased my car.....its a 1989 iroc-z 1le ex players challenge car......it's got a custom deep purple paint job and t-tops(aftermarkey).......4 wheel disc brakes and looks to b 12 or 13 inch rotors!......there huge......neways iv raced 4 irocs now and havr kileld every 1 of them......and they were all 350's with mods.....my cars a 305tpi with the 5sopd set up...i dunno really what kidna internal work my cars got done to it.....but so i can tlel its got k&n's, accel coil, accel plugs, accel fuel injectors and a high flow single cat runnin down to a flowmaster catback exhaust.....im jsut wodnering stock for stock was a 1le players challenge car faster then jsut a normal rock or no?....and how much did the 1le weihg compared to the normal iroc?.....i dunno y i keep winning...i got nolcue tho what my car has done to it internally totell you th truth....im waitign to race this guy acros the roa from me's gn......we were at the ligths b4 and i jsut punche dit for a sec and got a nice jump on him but shut it down cuz my detector started goin off......
1LE's had a good package one them that is for sure no air conditions save's quite a bit a horse not running that compressor.
You have a single cat though... i thought they came all with dual's but I could be wrong.. as for it smolkin other IROC's well you haven't raced me yet... hahahahah the challenge has been issued.. hahahaha

The 1le parts are way better designed than the standard stock parts. Flows more air, less weight, performance parts galore... It just goes to show you how restricted the setups are of most cars. Not to rain on everyone's TPI parade, but the 350 stock TPI wasn't designed to flow a 350's needs for air. It was designed for a 305. In essence a stock TPI 305 has more power per cubic inch than a stock 350 TPI. Now if one was to have a flow matched 350 TPI, that's a different matter, but in the long run the 305 TPI setup really gives a 350 a run for its money. Also 350 TPI's rarely came with the M-5. M-5's weren't made strong enough from factory stock to handle 300 ft/lb of torque properly and a 350 TPI is rated at 345 ft/lbs... go figure. GM had hell replacing drivetrain's under warranty. So enjoy the setup for what it is.. a real performance package. Us with the stock stuff are always coming though with real improvements...

The 1LE cars got the same engines as the regular IROC's and TA's. Same induction specs, same cams, same heads, same everything. The cars that where to be driven in the Players Challenge all received matched engines. They where not "blueprinted" or anything. They where just put together a little more carefully and then sealed with lead tabs. GM supplied a side exit exhaust and the cats where allowed to be removed. Now, the Firehawk Series cars are a whole other story................

The 305 in the PC cars were tested independently of the regular production line. According to what I was told wayyyy back when I used to hang around guys who raced these cars, the engines were dissassembled then reassembled for tolerances according to blue-print. There was an allowable range for HP that was on or about 235hp at the flywheel. The variance permitted was less than 1hp. Many of the PC races required cars to be randomly tested for engine spec and dyno right after the race and a couple of times there were guys who lost races in the trailer during testing... caught playing with chips and such.
The cars were given aluminum replacements that we are all familiar with plus radio and a/c delete, no power options and no tilt wheel. They were meant for the track after all.
Slade1 the 1LE parts were typically from the parts bin of larger cars or trucks -- or so my research has shown. Not much in the way of special parts for the IROC or GTA sorry. The 1LE RPO was just the starting point by-the-way, if you are looking for a PC car then the proof in the pudding is the RU7 RPO code.
I have been talking to a guy about an RU7 car for about 2 months now. STill can't agree on a price but who knows he may come down eh ? Even then I would NOT expect a car that would thrash other IROCs, etc. I've done track time in a PC car and driven another on the street and I can say they were fast but NOT THAT FAST.
89rock1le if your car is walking past the rest of them then I think you should check the block code on your '305'. Might be you have a 350 after all ? Maybe a highly mod'd 305. In either case if it is an RU7 car then you are facing a restoration if you want to retain the true value of the car.
Any chance you could post your RPO codes ? I would like to see them.
thx,
RP.

You are looking for RU7 and some other interesting codes that will mean radio delete and possibly a/c delete. The BIG board has a decoder you can use. If you have an RU7 some of your codes will be ultra rare on perhaps not be found. That would be a good sign. It would then be time to check and see if it was raced ?
This is what I did last time I looked at an RU7 and the guy said it was raced -- pulled the carpets in the front and rear corners where the roll cage mounted and look for weld marks. They are very obvious after being installed then cut out for the street.
About the whining sound does it do it while accelerating and decelerating ? How about during turns to left or right ? If it is making a whine put the car in neutral and let it coast -- see if it still makes a noise ? Try putting the car in reverse to about 30mph then push in the clutch is it still whining ? While still going backwards put it in neutral -- still whining ?
Good luck,
RP.

How about we agree to the next gathering -- and don't make it the weekend of the 22nd cause I am away on holidays ?
Also, lets make the location somewhere easier for the East Ontario guys to get to !

What happened at St. Thomas? It would be nice to have a gathering that doesn't require a 7 hour drive. I'd like to meet some of you guys.
