Thirdgen/f-body get together

I'm all for a normal get together some night of the week where we swap ideas, compare mods, and do some grunting. Nothing says lovin like a calvacade of V-8's roaring down a road together. Let's get some ideas on ideal times, places etc.

Well... I am in ranting mode right now, so bear with me. I would like some of you Greater Toronto Area guys to come down here, cause EVERYTIME I go to the GTA, my GTA gets caught in the rain and it gets messy underneath, and the hours I spent on polishing the crap on the engine goes down the drain (no pun intended).

So, my vote is come to Niagara Falls one weekend night, and I am sure we can find something to do... Fireworks on Fridays at 10pm, Cruise night on Sunday, Car show on Friday in Welland. I am only hitting Toronto for Hooters events with TFbM from now on, I am cursed with this dreaded rain!!!!

As far as meet in the Toronto area are concerned, just name the place and time and I'll try my best to make it. After the pathetic attendance at last nights get together, I won't be organizing any more meets for a while as it's a waste of my time. If someone else like yourself wants to plan it though, that's cool.

Nathan: I promised before and I meant it, as soon as I move to Hamilton, then I will definately make a few trips down to you area for sure.

Yeah.. sorry about my venting... its just very hard to get road grime from wet roads, off of black cars its still not clean, because its to ohot out, and the water drys off before I have a chance to chamois the car off, so water spot galore (yet another downfall of black cars, they attract heat, so soap bakes on when you wash it). I gave up, I'm cruizin' with water spots tonight.. I may do the quick detail Zainos spray later on when the sun is gone.

So I'm not the only one having problems with waterspots on my black 'bird...

I washed my GTA at a coin-car wash a couple of weeks ago and had nothnig to dry it with. By the time I got it home it looked *** awful. It sure looked nice when it was wet though.

edit

Umm... "g o d' is a banned word now? What'd he do?

I bought a half dozen car towels to dry the car with after washing it. Six or seven towels at $6.99 a piece ain't much. I never get sun or soap spots cause there isn't any water left when I am done.

Watched an episode of Crank and Chrome the other day and they did the whole eps on car detailing. One interesting product they showed was a car "squeegie" of sorts. This thing took the water off in one sweep and was made of soft plastic so it doesn't scratch. I'm going to have to find me one of those.

Yeah I saw that too. It was surgical rubber or something like that. I don't know how well it'd work but it might be worth a shot...

I bought a chamois for when I washed the GTA at home. Damn thing kept sticking to the wet metal. I'll have to get some towels.

Irocker: I would've went if I could've... I didn't get away from my brother's stag and doe until 1:30am, plus I was in my ol Jimmy anyway. If there's another let us know; I'll find a way to get my disabled brother in my GTA and we'll be there.

Since I'm a new member to this board, I didn't know about the meet. I lived in California for 4 months while on work term and learned a lot about f-bodies in general while I was there. I got to meet different camaro lovers, hear different disaster tales, and ride in some nice 67-68 camaros. My car isn't a real performer, but it isn't a slouch either but it is a GM f-body and it performs better than it should for the age and is reliable without reasonable doubt. I like that about the car, I like the people that own the cars usually, save for those that find it necessary to flame the TBI or 305's like they didn't deserve the name camaro. In person though, very personable and pleasant though. I was hoping we could get something like that here and see what goes from there. I'm the type of person that like to help outta pure good will, call me naive or what not cuz I'm not. I'm just ultra friendly. I only say stuff outta experience and from what I've seen happen and never shoot off more than I can back up with real life. So I'll try to see what we can do, compare notes and get the uninitiated initiated into the wonderful world of f-bodies. I grew up on these cars, dad owned a 79 camaro, 82 firebird, 82 trans-am, 84 mustang (previous 3 had horrible fates, *** rest their gm soul) and 88 camaro, of which I bought and now own and took 5 years of work as a student who managed to restore the car back to stock from a severely degraded form all the while in school and working.

I could have used a resource like this back then, so I just feel like I want to give back to the f-body community. My car has taken care of me, took me to California and back and during the winter is the only car that seems to not mind the weather. Maybe its in the car, or its skill but I never worry about bad weather. I don't worry about cold starts, braking, acceleration, handling, performance... its all there. I kinda want to make this happen because my cousin is an import guy and has an Acura RSX. Its only rated at 145 hp I think, even then we raced for fun and I smoked him, he wasn't in it for the performance but style. He had a group of guys, Acura owners that got together 3 times a month and compared notes, performance, problems, experiences and just something to see. We can't let their little acura group get the better of us. We have history, performance, reliability, and a design that is tried and true. I say get together because of that. I know this isn't the greatest motivational speech, and it could be better but I'm hoping to reach something, the something that makes us all love these cars.

As for the rain issue, yeah *** damn, when my car was black keeping it clean was a nightmare. If it wasn't pollen or dust, it was rain. If it wasn't that bird crap. I swear I couldn't keep it clean if my life depended on it. A chamois is the best way to dry it spotless. Invest in a very good and large area chamois and you won't be sorry. I'd never used a towel on a glossy black car... or glossy any color for that matter. Towel's leave marks, chamois is very soft. Squeegies are good, but don't absorb only move around water. Squeegie + chamois seems like a good combo.

Anyways, my paint scheme is $#!* right now, I got it done blue from an up and coming body maintenance friend, but damn did not come out well. On top of that got some rust to deal with, had to accept it comes with being a daily driver car.

Here are some suggestions:

Yorkdale parking lot 401/Allen Road
Sherway Gardens parking lot QEW/427
Fairview mall parking lot 404/401
Dave n Busters/AMC 40/Colossus/Wal-Mart 400/7

St. Catherines/Hamilton/Niagara QEW/403

I'm thinking of large parking lots near highways and around the GTA for gathering. I included the last option since there are many tourist parking lots on QEW to Niagara which we could meet at and keep our Niagara bretheren in the loop.

Any ideas for other places or ideal times, post them and we'll sort out what works and where and when.

I prefer weekend, day or evening.

Guys... I know about drying the car.. sheesh... the problem is that Black cars get soooooo hot, if you don' thave a garage to keep the sun off them, they are impossibly to dry the whole car before the water dries. I can wash it at 8pm when the sun is down... but then I miss a good 2 hours of quality cruise night time.

Word of advice.... don't buy a black car.... white or silver are the best... red is also nice... any lighter colour is good.

It's called a California Water Blade, and you can pick them up at Crappy Tire for around 35 bucks or so, work wicked.

here's a hint that has worked well

nblanchard...

Here's a little hint for you that has worked well for me and my all black 95 S10SS when drying...
Bring 2 towels with you to the car wash - wet one of them down when you wash the car.
Find yourself a nice shaded area, or stay parked in the car bay, and dry it off. If you have any waterspots, or areas that you may have missed, wipe gently with the wet towel, and dry. Detailing it after with polish and wax of course should be done with a damp cloth too when applying...
Hope this helps ya...I feel your pain...I own 2 black vehicles and my white IROC...

S10 dood, I ususlly just go to the coin wash and rinse it off, cause its usually just dust spots on it... but the wash after driving it in the rain was a pain, because it needed the soap and mit and the whole treatment.

Washing it at night it always an option, and I may start doing that, then throw the cover on it so it doesn't get dusty.

I don't have the squeegee thingy, but I have the absorber synthetic "chamois" and it works awesome, I recommend it to anyone.
