valve springs

After doing a few smart mods I decided to do something brainless, eg, see how many rpms I could pull with my lightly mod'd 305.

I got somewhere around 6100rpms which is pretty amazing considering it is a TPI and all that. The price for this experiment was a tick-tick-tick noise coming from the engine. It used to sound great now it sounds like a watch. I am reasonably certain it is a pushrod and/or rocker that has been abused. If it is a lifter gone bad I will be really p*ssed but I don't think that is the case.
FYI: the oil is fresh I use 5/50 Mobil synth with 1 liter of Lucas.

So I'll be planning on some valve train upgrades and I have a few questions for you engine builders:

1) does Comp Cams still make a good push-rod ? Suggest any others ?
2) has anyone tried the Crane Gold 1.6 rollers ? Good/bad experiences ?
3) any comments on Comp Cams conical HD springs ? What about GM HD springs ?

Looks like I'll be pulling the heads after all this winter. I can get my factory heads ported and polished for a decent price and was going to upgrade to 1.94 and 1.6 valves. I can do this for much less than the cost of a set of S/R Torquers which are about $1200 CDN.

Does anyone have any comments (+/-) on building factory heads ? I am hoping to see 35-40hp gains over stock with head work, rockers and headers.

thx in advance,
RP.

I'm not an engine builder in any way, but I have heard many bad things about the Gold rollers in the LT1's. I'm assuming the same would apply for us.

Just my 2 cents, but I suggest something like this:

1) LT4 springs
2) LT4 1.6 rollers
3) GMPP HO lifter kit
4) Probably for less than the cost of port and polish on stock heads...Vortec heads and Scoggin Vortec intake. The Vortec heads are about $250 a piece for the casting without valve train. But this may be out of your budget, I'm not sure.

....Yes they do. I'd suggest the LPE chromoly pushrods though. They're a smokin' deal at around $30 US for a set.

......If you get a set of Crane Gold's, get the ones sold through GMPP. GM made Crane revise the trunions for less wear so that they could be sold on a warrenteed engine(LT4). I have the Comp Cams Pro Mag rockers. They just released a guided version. They are lighter over the valve which means wonderful things. The heavy valvetranes in our cars need all the help they can get.

......Your best bet here is to call Comp and see what they recommend. Make sure you get a matched set for the cam your gonna want to take advantage of the increased airflow through those heads

As for porting the factory heads.......A gentleman recently ported his set of B2L heads on the TPI board. The results he came up with where pretty surprising.
