swap rear gears and VSS upgrade
I was thinking about installing some 3.73s (from 3.42s) and know you have to by new gear for the VSS at the same time. Does anyone know of any sources around South Ontario, GTA, KW, etc who can supply these ? Anyone done it before ? I'll want to get the right setup for the VSS to read true to the speedo.
thx much,
RP.

I'll be installing my 3.73's in over the winter but won't be worrying about the proper speed. I dealt with that problem for 4 years until I installed the 3.08's. Surprisingly, my speedo is perfect know with the 16" and 17" rims. Then again that could be because the two are almost the same height maybe be off by even half of an inch.
But if you do want the right speed than you need to purchase two speedo gears that go into the transmission. Theres an article on the board somewhere that explains to you which gears you need to order from gm (provides part number) according to which gear ratio your installing. You could probably do this yourself.
I hope I answered your question or even provided some help. Probably not
Where's Slade1 when you need an answer!!

Slade1 says go to GM parts department and ask for speedo gears pertaining to the ratio of the rear end.
Very cheap and easy to do, provided that gear ratio was offered by GM... doesn't matter if auto or stick..
if not, we can do the "figure out which color gear pertain to the right ratio" brain drain...

3.73's where offered on the '84 L69 5 speed cars. Gm has a reference chart with all the colors on it. You could also buy a translator box since you have a VSS. That would allow for any wheel or tire upgrades in the future.
