PLEASE Is there IROC rims for sale....anywhere?
PLEASE Is there IROC rims for sale....anywhere?
1987 16"x8" (Front) Iroc Rim
Two Weeks ago I bought a set out of the tri-ad.
One was no good so now I need one front.
The new Tri-ad has the same ad from the same guy again, and I called him back to see if he had more for sale or a replacement front and no he doesn't. The ad is in the paper again by mistake.
I've called every wheel shop and junk yard in ontario and no one has one or knows of one. Bodyline auto wreckers in hamilton knew of one guy , so I called him but he wants $1200.00 !!!!!
The wheel is a discontinued part for dealers, just for fun however I asked how much a new center cap is and its $46.00!!!! nuts!
Looked all over the internet as best I can theres a place in california but they want $200 US for a used front rim.
Some places sell a new reproduction but personally I think its too much and it will look alot different when compared to the other three that are good which I had refinished.
I've even tried to get just a simple black steel wheel 16", that I can use as a temp wheel until I find a decent front somewhere, but thats not even possible. I've been told by eight different wheel shops that there is no way to buy an inexpensive temporary wheel for that car, there just isn't one made unless you go chrome.
At first I thought oh well I'll find someone whos selling one and get that refinished and be done with it. But now I can't even find a set for sale yet alone one front.
Now I know if I wait long enough a set will come up for sale somewhere but I want to get it taken care of like this week or ASAP, this car has been absolutely driving me up the wall with things happening to prevent me getting it on the road....
There was even a set for sale on the classifieds of this board and I was excited until I phoned Karsten and they were already gone...
Now all I want to do is find one or a set and buy them and drive the car.....
Does anyone ......anyone! know where I might look, or try, or call, even if its a longshot I don't care.
What would be great is if someone knew someone else who had and old wheel laying around, or and old set that I could buy?
I'll drive to get them. I don't care if its far...
Please let me know as soon as you can Please
Thanks to anyone that can help

What is wrong with the one rim?? As for the tri-ads look again. I saw more than one ad for thos rims. Also look in the buy and sell and the auto trader. I believe I saw those rims for sale, not sure.
If the rim is bent or broken than get it fixed. I know a guy in uxbridge who does an amazing job on factory rims! They also have free drop off and pick up in the GTA. The name of the company is The Wheel Fix. Their on the net. Do a search and you might be able to find them.
Good luck

Well, the one front rim that I was told was no good has a crack in it. Now the shop that I had refinish them told me that they're welder guy said he would not weld that rim because apparently no matter what, the crack will continue to spread? I'm not an expert but I trusted his judgement in the hopes that he just wasn't trying to get out of a just that he just couldn't be bothered with... The rim is also bent....a little so...even if it is fixable I may like to get another to be on the safe side.
Now in the newest Tri-ad there is two separate "picture" ads for those rims. However they are both from the same person if you check the phone number and the town should be Tecumseh.
If there is more ads than those two that you noticed then I missed one or some and please let me know, I would look again to confirm right now but I don't have the paper anymore.
I did check the "text" ads in the end of section "B" and in all of section "C" and I didn't see any for sale, although there was a few camaro parts cars in there so I callled but none of them had any rims left....
Now aside from all that I will definately check out The Wheel fix.
They sound alot better that who I used, even though my refinished wheels still look excellent, free pick up and drop off would be nice
Thanks for the great contact and info 88redxtsy!!

Aluminum IROC rims, I wouldn't get welded to reapir them.
Aluminum does not take kindly to welding in general, heat alters the strength and overall area exposed to this heat. Its why you don't ever see welded aluminum frames commonly, many issues arise that force the weld site to be reinforced, not to mention corrosion issues that can form at the weld site.
When fabricated, the composition of the aluminum alloy was uniform through out the wheel, now with a crack and the addition of the welding material, the dynamics of the wheel change.

Slade1:
Thanks for the heads up, I knew that aluminum welding is kinda weird/tricky in general. From what I've heard its much more difficult to weld with. The Rim shop also said that when build up weld or in areas where they had to put down alot of material to repair there would be a good chance of tiny air bubbles in the finished product?
tanager11: Ok, thanks!

The shop is right in telling you that it will bubble.
For the weld, they will use an aluminum alloy that hopefully would match the strength of the original aluminum.
The thing about aluminum is at melting point hydrogen becomes VERY soluble in aluminum. The aluminum weld becomes porus due to this and thus air bubbles form in the weld degrading the strength of the weld further.
common sources of hydrogen are moisture, water, hydrocarbons (grease, even in small amounts not even visible contain many hydrogen atoms) This can be avoided by properly cleaning the area and welding in an inert gas environment, but with the equipment needed for such a task, its just not worth it.
This is why aluminum welding is avoided as much as possible. Anything that does use aluminum is extruded or cast to promote a uniform strength to the design.
In the end you will have a wheel that is imbalanced and succeptible to many factors that a normal rim would handle but a repaired one will crack at.
