Question about storing on blocks...

I would like to put my car on blocks for the winter. Main reason is because I am going to do alot of detailing/cleaning underneath the car as well as in the wheel wells, so I'd like all 4 wheels off. I would like to clean the wheels as well inside while they're off.

Then, I want to take apart the top-half of the engine. I need to replace the Intake Manifold Gasket cuz it's leaking, and while that's off I'm going to do all the sanding and polishing. So in other words I won't have time to drive my car around my underground garage every 2 weeks, so what's the best way to go about storing it?

Is there a button on this board that prohibits certain members to access my posts? :P

I went to my mechanic yesterday and he loosened up the bolts. Now I have no trouble getting the wheels off.

by loosened do you mean he torqued them to proper specs or just loosened them? either way i guess if you arent driving it for the rest of the winter it doesnt matter...

I suggest storing it on pillows because with your now brittle subframe it could give at any moment...

thats a very good point........even wrenching on the wheels could cause a catastrophic failure of both the frame and sheet metal......hell it might even implode

What do you mean by "blocks". Might want to use jack stands if your going to work under it o/wise someone might be buying your car at an insurance auction in the spring and wondering why it smells like rotted meat.

George is right, again. Buy 4 jack stands and put them under the car so that the suspension is loaded.

Hey Alex. Put one axle stand under the rear axle closest to the wheel on either side without keeping you from removing them. (the tires that is) As for the front end put the axle stand right under the lower control arm on either side. You don't want to let the suspension hang, cause if you do your car will be a 4x4 in the new year. As for getting a picture... Well you do know what your rear axle is right...and you do know what your front lower control arms are right...that is where they go. Just make sure that they are square when the car is resting on them. Don't buy some cheap stands though. Buy some that are going to last you the rest of your life, that way you will never have to buy them again. If you buy cheap ones the car may fall on you...and that would be bad! Good luck!

I suggest having an experience person or a grown up present..Setting a car on jackstands is a dangerous procedure..

Maybe you can go to a local high school and ask one of the students there to help you..j/k

BTW GET A MANUAL..its got pretty prints

Do I understand you are going to put your car on stands in an underground parking stall ? If so I would like to caution you that it may lead to theft. I mean the wheels will be off the ground ready for the first scumbag thief to come along and remove at your expense. Not too mention whatever else someone decides they want ?

Are you sure you want to do this ? Around these parts there are people who will rent you reasonably secure heated/unheated space for several months and at reasonable costs. Maybe you ought to check into this instead ?

Also, the base manifold re & re is a big job for a first timer. There are alot of mistakes to be made trust me when I say you really need to get some help on that job. Really -- you better ask for some help from someone who has done it before.

my .02 cents worth,
RP.

I have heard that underground apartment garages are bad for car storage. I mean you are leaving your car in an envirnment that is constantly damp and new salt and road grime is being added daily. Thats what I was told, could be bs, but the all the ones I've ever used were very damp in winter.

I was actually thinking of keeping the wheels off while the car is on the jack stands. I'll just keep them at home until spring.

As for my underground garage, well I'm not too concerned about theft. It is a very well secured area. I have 3 cameras pointing at my car. Requires a lasercut key to get in and out of the garage. There are cameras at every part of the building... Besides I grew up with all the thugs in the neighbourhood and they all know me, so why would they steal my car? :P

Easy:
Now that you've got it all cleaned up you SHOULD get it appraised... and make sure the insurance company would reinburse you based on the appraised value if it got stolen.
