There's also some detailed info on the 2002 IROC's engine/chassis/suspension.

I've checked it out... and it's awesome. I have always wanted to build an IROC replica and tune it for autoX with CASCAR slicks on 4 corners.

johnyIROC, a friend of mine has a unused street stock camaro thats staggered to the left side about 18 inches for oval dirt/asphalt... I think there are enough parts for a rolling chassis if yer honestly interested... probably willing to part with it really cheap too cause it's just been sitting around for 3yrs now waiting to be finished

Thanx for the lead, but I would be building it for auto X... need to be able to turn left and right.

I think he meant the fact that the date he said the race was prior to the third generation camaro.

Yeah that could be...but it still says Camaro on the fornt clip...making it a Camaro and it is definately not a 2nd gen body. No??

What I mean is why is there an example of a thirdgen body style back in 1980? That would mean they came up with the body style back in the late 70's and released it to a private few to create some track cars.

That is a good point...just remember..they call them concept cars. The 3rd gen body style was probably designed in yeap..the early 70's. But maybe the date on the picture is incorrect. Nice car either or.

pretty sure the 1980 date is a mistake... they used 2nd gens up to 1980 when chev took a break from the IROC series... wasn't till 1984 that chev returned to the IROC series with 3rd gen IROC and the street version surfacing the following year as a $659 option.

Yes I got all this info from the link I posted where I got the second(large) picture btw.

actually they began working on the design in the late 70s. i was reading a camaro book in the summer and it had some really awesome pictures of the not only 1st and 2nd gen prototypes, but also 3rd gen prototypes. they built some prototypes in the late 70s, like 78 and 79 (if i remember correctly). i cant remember who wrote the book but it had tons of great info and great photos. the book was kinda old...like mids 80s and i think it was called Camaro.

I would have initially said the 1980 thing is a typo, but I did some research. The first 1982, and thus the first third gen Camaro "emerged" on December 12th, 1978. By this, I believe they mean the sketches. The first fiberglass mockups in Feb. 1979, and the first steel prototypes in Mar 1980. These were taken to GM's proving grounds and run with the earlier 1981 model year Z28's. The IROC pic though, according to the book (which has the same pic in it as well as several others), says that race depicted in those photos took place in 1984. They ran 12 identical Camaros so driver could test their skills instead of their cars. The race had been on hiatus since 1980 and revived again in '84. So there ya have it!

*facts taken from the book "Camaro: the Third Generation"by Michael Lamm..likely this is the book you saw Brad. It's been in my own personal library since 1993 and I believe it has been out of print for some time.

noooooo, that thing is terrible! Thank goodness they never produced one of those things. Imagine a 3rd gen with that sort of configuration....no that would be weird.

They built one for the 3rd gen as well, I've seen pics but I can't remember where though.
