I need a few information regarding the kind of inspection I should expect on my car. My car is a 1987.....wondering if the year as anything to do with the type of inspection I should expect. Here in Québec they only do a safety inspection when your coming from an other province that means as long as the car is safe on the road they don't care if the car doesn't have any CAT, EGR, AIR, or if its been carbed etc.....
From what I've been told it's a little more complicated than that in Ontario. Is there a web site or there someone that can explain to me exactly what they are going to look at when I'll go for the inspection.
Right now the car has no CAT, EGR, AIR yada yada and it's loud. By the way I will be moving in the Renfrew County if that change anything ????
Thank you.

First off, there's an F-Body club here in Ottawa, all generations. You should consider coming out to the odd get togeather this summer to meet some people, and their rides. Let us see your ride too.
As for your car, being an '87, you'll do the 1 e-test, then it's done. I would consider getting a high-flow cat. They don't rob that much horsepower, and are not too pricey. I saw Magnaflow cats at Parts Source for @ $80. You can also order a cat with a bigger inlet/outlet - 3" no problem. And you will at least not have to be nervious taking it off your property. It's just not worth the headaches to run without one versus the power you lose - next to none. And it'll only quiet your car a few decibles, so not to worry about losing any sound you love.
As for the rest of the stuff your missing, I'll let guys on here with experience with the lack of emissions equipment and e-tests speak out.

There is a list of items that have to be checked for a "safety" certificate to be issued in Ontario. Pretty much any garage with a licensed mechanic can do it- and much of it really is discretionary and will depend on the mechanic (i.e. tie rods/balljoints- there is no "specification" for the amount of acceptable play- so one mechanic might allow some slop- another mechanic might not allow any)- meaning that how hard a safety will be to pass is going to rely partially on what garage you take it to (i.e. avoid new car dealers and Canadian Tires as a first step- they invariably are tough on everything in order for them to make maximum $$$'s on the job). Ontario also has emissions testing which may apply to you depending on the age of your car. The specifics on all this can be found at the Ontario Ministry of Transportation website.
Some things you are not likely to have overlooked no matter what garage you go to are things like exhaust problems (holes), no cat(s), holes in bodywork, seatbelt and electrical (lighting) issues.
If you will be living in the Renfrew area- you're not very far from the Quebec border- so why the rush to get an Ontario Drivers Licenses and plates on your car? Why not get an address in the Shawville, QC area and call that "home" for the Quebec transportation people?

Renfrew county does not require e-testing, basically anytwhere North of Arnprior, you will be free and clear.

I'll see what I can do but I don't think I'll have time for this before the end of the summer.......

I would like to have that list and see what they are going to look at...I couldn't find that on the Ontario Ministry of Transportation site.

I know it can be done but the main problem is with the insurance companies, if something happens I may end up paying big $$$$.

Good news....but I still wonder if they will be looking for anything beside the CAT as far as emission stuff is concern. Right now the best I can do is to reinstall the stock CAT (without air) for the inpection.
Here is what I found on the Drive Clean site.....
Quote:
If your car is a 1987 or earlier model, it leaves the program permanently when it is 20 years old.
Cars currently registered as “historic” vehicles continue to be exempt from Drive Clean test requirements because of their age. An exemption will be recommended for vehicles of the 1988 and newer model years from all test requirements when they reach 30 years of age, if they receive designation as historic vehicles under the Highway Traffic Act.
Light-duty vehicles have been exempt from emissions testing when they were 20 years old, both for registration renewal and ownership transfer. A 1986 vehicle had its last emissions test in 2005 and a 1987 will have its last test in 2006.

You need ALLL stock smogg stuff intact . All vaccum lines have to be in their rigth place . Some have gotten a 350 dollar fine for just haveing a line off of the canister.
Welcome to Ontario man !

Even if I do not require e-testing ????? Now I'm not to happy about that. What is a canister You need ALLL stock smogg stuff intact . All vaccum lines have to be in their rigth place . Some have gotten a 350 dollar fine for just haveing a line off of the canister.
???I guess I'll have to find someone who is willing to let me pass the safety inspection without the smog stuff installed.....if that's possible.
If not I guess I could always sell the body and drop the engine and tranny in something older..........
NOTThanks

Technically speaking- none of the emissions devices have to be in/on a car to get a Safety Certificate in Ontario.
While it sounds a bit obscure- a car with no engine installed could still "pass" a safety. The pollution device laws are not part of the checklist for a "safety"- but I've never seen a garage let one get through without a catalytic converter unless you're friends with the mechanic. Misrouted vacuum lines, no charcoal canister, no EGR- yes- but the cat./lack thereof they always spot when they're looking for holes in the exhaust system and call you on it every time- despite the fact it really isn't part of their mandate to do so- as long as your exhaust has no leaks- it isn't a "safety" issue. Shops that say you need emissions hardware repaired/replaced are just being difficult- most shops won't open the hood unless they have to see why your horn isn't blowing or they're trying to get a few extra $$$'s from you. See my first comment about a safety having alot of "discretionary" points. While you and a mechanic may know you are in violation of Federal & provincial emissions laws with devices not functioning or missing- it's not part of a safety- every shop bets that your knowledge of the laws you're violating will make you pay their bill- or at the very least have you not want to tow the car to another shop where they may very well tell you the same thing.

Thanks Eric2ndGen,
Looks like safety inspections are the same in Ontario VS Québec, they sure didn't say a word about me not having a CAT here. But I had to change my winshield washer motor because it didn't work.......I had to be able to get rid of those dead bugs on the winshield, if not it would have been a safety issue
.
Here also you can be fined for not having a CAT, it's usualy enforced by the cops at get together when they look at your car, or when they find your exhaust to loud and ask for an inspection. The big thing here is the lack of e testing.
So I will probably reinstall my stock CAT for the inspection and see from there.

One last thing I probably should have mentioned:
Many shops think of a Safety as almost a "license to print money"- so shop around and ask people you know if they have a decent shop to go to. New car dealerships and Canadian Tire auto centres are never a good idea for safeties.
