Ottawa 6 spd owners.

I dont know many F-body owners in Ottawa. Just my bro, one of his freinds, and Kyle, who i traded parts with.

But anyways, i know a couple of you on this board are from Ottawa, and couple of those have T56 or tremecs or TKOs or something.

For those of you who bought used, just curious where you folks got it?

I have my budget lined up, and im in store for a T56 over the winter. QUALITY is my number 1 concern, more than time. And money a little bit too.

Any input appreciated.

P.S.
If you are going to post suggestions about lookin on the internet, i got that part covered pretty well, im looking for other tips, like some secret junk yard or a swap meet i dont know about But again, any input is good.

Re: Ottawa 6 spd owners.

Hmm, I think I might be one of the only othet guys.
I've had my T56 in the IROC for 8 yrs now I think.
I found it used from a guy in TO who was going to put it in a rod. It was $800. A friend spotted it after in a lesser known old car newspaper his shop gets.
I'd say keep an eye on guys parting cars out on the boards, 4th and 3rd gens. Try Arnprior Auto locally, get them to jump on the inter-wrecker computer system to find one.
I also got some parts (pedals/bellhousing/flywheel/used clutch) at Cookstown Auto Centre Ltd - 5046 5 Sideroad, Cookstown, ON L0L 1L0 (705) 458-4366. They had a 95 Z to part out and were good guys.

I'd also recommend tyring to get a bellhousing that will allow you to run an older push style clutch as the LT1 style clutches are pretty expensive and there are not many choices for pressure plates (there are maybe 3).
Good luck.

Re: Ottawa 6 spd owners.

Thats exactly the kind of info i was looking for. Thanks for the tips. I gotta get my hands on one of those newspapers, i sold my last car thanks to one.

Actually there is one other guy, but hes not on this board that has a 6spd. He just installed it last year i think. A freind of a freind kinda thing, he goes to the shows in Toronto every year, and he has a nicely built car. Name is kyle, he has a red camaro, and you can recognize his car cuz it has a second gen spoiler, except it looks like its part of the car, not just bolted on. Very nicely done.

See if the guys at www.ccfbg.com can help. Post up in the wanted section. The "who you know" route may cost you less.

Re: Ottawa 6 spd owners.

i think so, ive only met him once, nice guy, and his dad owns some really sweet cars.

He told me he had just put it in, it was over the summer. And yea i think he did run a 700r4 before, he was telling me how easy it was to swap over cuz of the similariteis between the two.

Re: Ottawa 6 spd owners.

Where are you guys located? I live in Gloucester near the Split. Would one of you guys be interested in meeting up, (me coming to see your car basically) for a crash course in whats involved with installing this thing?

I got most of it down with the tech articles, but still not sure about the pedals and the clucth part.

Would be nice to see the finished product.

Re: Ottawa 6 spd owners.

There's not really much to see for the pedals and clutch with the car together.
I just got a set from I think an 85 firebird, they bolt right in. You'll need to drill out the floor to get the hydraulic slave installed. It mounts with a U shaped bolt fromthe engine side, you should get the bolt with the pedals. I think the pattern is even on the firewall already.
I used a new 4th gen slave and had to shorten the actuating rod by about 1/2" if I remember right. The 3rd and 4th gen slaves mount the same in the car. The LT1 style clutch bolted right up to the LT1 flywheel. I used the same flywheel on my old 86 305 (1pc rear main seal) and the new 95 LT1.

That's it, not much to it. It was harder to fab up a cross member and figure out the speedo drive.
Let me know if you have any more specific questions...

If you want to meet up, we could in the new year when things settle down...

Re: Ottawa 6 spd owners.

That pic actually helps. Will let you know if i run into any more trouble.

Why did you have to shorten the actuating rod? Will have to do the same? Im using the stock setup for everything. I will probably purchase a new stock clutch disc, but thats about it. The tranny, bell housing, B&M shifter, and clutch fork are from one car, the rest including hydraulics is from another car.

Both are 95 trans ams.

Re: Ottawa 6 spd owners.

Had to shorten the rod as it didn't provide the proper pedal height.
Don't use a stock clutch disc they don't hold much power over 300hp. I use the McLeod 7500rpm friction disc (I think Mcleod 261871) it has kevlar on one side and organic onthe other; with an SLP pressure plate that is the same as a stock LT4 PP but with holes drilled in the friction surface for less mass and easier disengagement.

A lot of guys here http://www.camaroz28.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=44
use an Autozone LT1 clutch. They use the PP, chuck the friction disk and use the McLeod. This is the cheapest source for the Valeo PP.
BTW there is only 1 company, Valeo, that makes all the LT1 PP's. The LT4 one has aslightly higher clamp pressure than a stocker. From what I know, even Spec uses stock Valeo PP's and paints them blue/purple.

Re: Ottawa 6 spd owners.

I know Mcloed is the name for clutches, but nearing the price of the transmission (or more), i just cant afford it right now. The stocker discs were behing an LS1/LT1 so it should be alright in my car for regular driving.

Mcloed will have to wait till next winter...

Re: Ottawa 6 spd owners.

ah...now i get to go though an even bigger swap...i picked up an LS motor so i have to re-wire the whole engine bay.ha. after i did all that work to get rid of all electronics i get to undo what i did....well after i find an LSx wired car to take the computer and wiring harness from.

and i have to convert my trans to LS1 style,so new input shaft, bell housing and hydraulics. That will probably start next winter.

So youre gonna rebuild the tranny? I dont think its thats simple.

In any case, what are you doing with your old motor?

Re: Ottawa 6 spd owners.

the trans needs re-building anyway so why not do the swap at the same time.D and D performance in the states(not the one in chesterville) has the peices to do the viper spec borg warner T-56 and the ls1 input shaft

I'm going to get the old motor gone over and my girlfriend wants to drop it into a car she's found online that we'd have to go pick up.
